For PeterB: Some SX50 Photos + a look at RAW vs JPG (BW warning!) - JoeM - 09-22-2015 Following up on PeterB's post : http://forums.macresource.com/read.php?1,1909111 here are some photos I took at historic Smithville in NJ with the SX50 last Saturday. Mostly shot as JPG and untweaked other than resized to 900px wide and saved in medium JPG to reduce size. The first few show the range of the zoom lense with some showing from 24mm to 1200 mm. I added a yellow rectangle around the zoomed area in a few:: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I was pretty impressed with the amount of detail in the geese from this distance: ![]() ![]() ![]() And even though I was closer, same with the bird: ![]() ![]() ![]() Finally, here's a comparison of RAW vs JPG and then the RAW image with some processing: The JPG, not cropped: ![]() The RAW, unprocessed and not cropped: ![]() The processed JPG does a decent job blurring the inherent noise when compared to the RAW version above The RAW with some processing (color tweaks and noise reduction in Adobe RAW: ![]() And here's some photos of the same image @ 100% size and cropped: The original JPG: ![]() The RAW unprocessed: ![]() The RAW, processed with color tweaks and noise reduction: ![]() I hope these examples are a help to anyone that might be considering purchasing the SX50. Downsizing and recompressing really doesn't do the original images justice but hopefully you'll get an idea of what the SX50's zoom and RAW capabilities provide. I can say I'm really happy with it as my new vacation camera. Re: For PeterB: Some SX50 Photos + a look at RAW vs JPG (BW warning!) - DP - 09-22-2015 And to reiterate: If you aren't a RAW shooter, be sure to set your JPEG to Superfine. It's not available in the SX40 and until JoeM mentioned it, I didn't know there was a SF setting on the 50. Good pix and info! Re: For PeterB: Some SX50 Photos + a look at RAW vs JPG (BW warning!) - rgG - 09-22-2015 I really don't need another camera/anything, but the zoom on the SX50 makes me drool. ![]() Re: For PeterB: Some SX50 Photos + a look at RAW vs JPG (BW warning!) - JoeM - 09-22-2015 rgG wrote: I felt I didn't need the extra range in the zoom over what my SX40 has and thought it would be too hard to control hand held but I've changed my mind about both since getting it. Re: For PeterB: Some SX50 Photos + a look at RAW vs JPG (BW warning!) - RAMd®d - 09-22-2015 This first thing I did once I opened up the 50, was to select SuperFine + L. Of course, doing so limits my capacity to only 3300+ pics on a 16G card. Re: For PeterB: Some SX50 Photos + a look at RAW vs JPG (BW warning!) - PeterB - 09-22-2015 Thanks for posting these, great pix!
