Remember that US Govt OPM Hack ? They got FINGERPRINTS ! - cbelt3 - 09-23-2015

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-switch/wp/2015/09/23/opm-now-says-more-than-five-million-fingerprints-compromised-in-breaches/

"One of the scariest parts of the massive cybersecurity breaches at the Office of Personnel Management just got worse: The agency now says 5.6 million people's fingerprints were stolen as part of the hacks.

That's more than five times the 1.1 million government officials estimated when the cyberattacks were initially disclosed over the summer. The total number of those believed to be caught up in the breaches, which included the theft of the Social Security numbers and addresses of more than 21 million former and current government employees, remains the same."

Time to turn OFF all those fingerprint scanners. Including iOS devices.... you CAN 3D print a fingerprint and have it work.... I wonder if the DNA and Retina databases were also hacked ?

I vaguely remember a film (or TV show?) from decades ago where someone made copies of fingerprints to use them in a crime. not the first time, I imagine, this has been contemplated.

It's an old school technique. I recall it in a James Bond film with Sean Connery. The issue was always.. you have to get the fingerprints FIRST. With online records, the Chinese now have fingerprints for 5 MILLION active duty military and civilian government employees. Kind of exactly the people you want.

Copying fingerprints was done in a "Charlie Chan" movie. A prison trustee had access to fingerprint files and, got prints smuggled out, to facilitate framing ex-cons so the real gang of thieves would not be caught.

I should have been more specific: I recall a rubber "hand" being used with the new fingerprints on it. I'm sure it's been thought of long before the movie I recall, and it was not Charlie Chan.

Jeez, every Mission Impossible style TV spy show and movie from the sixties must have used the fake fingerprint device at least once in a plot.

Even Maxwell Smart did it. And fake lips covered in a poison.

Fortunately, Apple does not store fingerprint data nor do its devices in any form that can be used by a third party. It would be great if other device manufacturers did likewise.

Unlocking a stolen iPhone by reproducing the fingerprints sounds like an awful lot of work for small reward.

Also used in the Gone In 60 Seconds remake.
