Where/how does one sort Google search results by date? Or, manipulate by date more than their advanced search's few date ranges?

I think it must be a way to FORCE their advertiser-sponsored sort order.
Why do they block robots from their advanced search page?

It must be too hard for them to figure out how to sort by date (last updated or created).
