O. T. - Jet goes off end of runway into the water (old news) - Carnos Jax - 09-12-2006

Did any of y'all hear about this? It occured sometime last year at Atantic City New Jersey. The video gets interesting about half way through, when the engine restarts.

Yeah, I saw that. What a remarkably bad piece of piloting! Did you read the NTSB report? Pilot claimed to have lost his brakes.

What a dope: landing a jet at an airport specifically closed to jet traffic. Landing DOWNWIND on a runway that was too short for his aircraft anyway. Performing a low pass and landing at an uncontrolled field without communicating on UNICOM (with another slower a/c in the pattern already). Crashing. Then exiting the a/c without making sure power was off and the aircraft was secure.

Wonder what he's doing for a living now?

Crazy...I didn't know all that. I usually read the NTSB reports for lessons learned, but didn't bother this time. The registration number of his plane was OY-JET. He ended up getting another plane. This time he picked OY-WET.

Actually this is the type of airplane I teach maintenance on and I have a copy of this video which was used in the court case as well. It is unusual to have this kind of occurance (engine restarting) but it can happen. Pilots destroying perfectly good aircraft tick me off.

I have a ton of accident photos of various citation's almost all pilot error.

Birdman, do you by any chance know how the engine restarted? Don't know much about about this particular model in the Citation series, but being that it's a newer model, did it have some sort of FADEC? Maybe some sort of short occured in the starting circuit? Or perhaps the pilot just didn't properly secure the plane?

No FADEC on this model, just a short in the start relay inside the main junction box. It was salt water as well so it just happened. Also the throttle levers were at full power setting since he tried a go-around at the last moment.

The new version of this model has a fadec but this was an older serial number.

Thanks birdman, a couple of my friends at work will be interested in knowing this.
