Airport Extreme - G faster than N issue - rouderon - 03-09-2016
I have a late '08 iMac that consistently shows wireless G about 10-20mbps faster than N. I tested it on a MBP (2007 model) and I'm getting equal speeds for both. Is this a problem with the wireless card in the iMac - or a software issue?

The 802.11n specification was ratified in September 2009. Your Late 2008 iMac very likely uses a per-ratified version of 802.11n that may not be 100% compatible with the final version of the spec.

That's probably not the problem. This 2007 MacBook is faster on 802.11n than 802.11g. Original....

LAN or Internet? What router? If the MacBook Pro is much further away from the router and you are using 5 GHz N, that could be the problem. Higher frequency, signal drop off is worse.

This is true. I saw a similar issue with my 2011 iMac. Switching to 2.4 GHz, either G or N, resulted in much better throughput.

I'm using a 5th gen Airport Extreme. I set the MBP right beside the iMac to test (so there would be no question). As with my iPhone post above, I think I'm about to nuke/pave the iMac. I have a WordPress website that all of a sudden I can no longer access from the iMac (but can from all other Macs & pc's in the house). I've tried flushing dns, deleting caches, etc, but no matter what, when I go to the page it gives me a server error. I have no problem with all other websites I've tried to access. So, I'm starting to think there's a software problem on the iMac. Prior to now, I've always got great wireless N speedtest results (usually better than G - if I remember correctly)

I wonder if this is more an AirPort problem than an iPhone/iMac problem.

That's curious. It has to be a device issue if the problem persists to other locations.
