I have long time friends in joisey that roast coffee.
It's quite good.
Recently, a place opened up nearby that also roasts very nicely.
I wouldn't say that I am a coffee phreak, but I know the difference between a good and recent roast as compared to maxwell house or martinson or trader joes or the local market.
All else being equal, would you tend to buy from the old friends or the local biz?

I marked old friends. I still buy my coffee from a place in Chicago that I lived down the street from. They roast their own and I've known them since the mid-70s when they opened.
In your case, I suppose if you don't buy much and the new place is better...maybe you can split your purchases between the two?

I preferentially purchase much more expensive items than coffee (amateur astronomy) from a friend who runs an astro parts business though if there is an unusually good sale elsewhere I will buy there.
So I guess my friendship has a price, eh?

Unless THIS is your Jersey friend who roasts coffee... It's a wee bit insane to drive into Jersey for coffee. How far out of your way is the friend's shop? Tolls and gas and traffic just for coffee sucks.
