Latest AppleTV and Old receiver--HDMI - MartyStickle - 03-21-2016

I've got an ATV 3 (I think) and a 50 in plasma TV with HDMI. My sound goes through an older Yamaha receiver that does not have HDMI. Can anyone educate me on what my options are if I purchase a new ATV?

This isn't a lot of information to go on, but in general:

You could try a device that splits the HDMI signal into HDMI video and breaks out the audio into toslink/optical. There are lots of options for these. How well they play with the HDMI "handshake" though...

Presumably your TV has HDMI input. Does it have an optical audio output? Then you could route the HDMI through the TV first and use the TV's audio output (not all TV's will output a 5.1 audio signal thought, a lot of them will only output stereo).

Marty,

Gareth is on the right track. What kind of TV? Modern with HDMI and optical out? Does your receiver have optical in? If so, the solution is as he suggested. Connect the TV optical out to the receiver optical in. Connect the AppleTv to one of the TV's HDMI ports. Use the TV for switching.

This is how my system was setup for quite a while. Multiple items connected to the TV. TV optical out to optical in on receiver. Used the Tv for switching. Did this with a higher end Sony TV and, when that went kablooey, a higher end Samsung. No issues with audio. Enjoyed 5.1 surround without any issues.

FWIW, I replaced the old receiver with a modern Denon model that has HDMI and a slew of other niceties. Worth every penny! Definitely sorry I waited so long to get a new receiver.

My Samsung 55" has RCA jacks for audio out, so I just connect the TV to my old receiver, and it works just fine. Doesn't matter whether the source is cable or AppleTV or DVD in. I assume your receiver is the same: if no 'TV' inputs, just use the 'CD/Aux' inputs.

MrLynn,

That's if you just want stereo. You need to use optical or coaxial for 5.1 surround, assuming the TV supports 5.1 via the digital audio out.

You have to use HDMI into the TV. From the TV you can use analog audio to the receiver (if your tv has analog outputs) or use the optical output combined with an inexpensive DAC to provide the analog output. I use the FiiO D07 which is very affordable and works well. It is possible your older Yamaha receiver has an optical port on the back depending on it's age. If so you can skip the DAC.

You can buy a device that splits the HDMI into HDMI and optical audio but I've read mixed things about that. If you try it please report back what your experience is.

He didn't say he wanted 5.1 surround sound. Assuming his TV has RCA audio jacks, it's easy to get stereo sound.

MrLynn,

True. Still, it was something you didn't mention in your post which may or may not be important to him. More and more content has 5.1 sound these days, even regular network TV. So, given the choice, something that provides that option is preferable. FWIW, these days, TVs usually don't have audio out via RCA jacks. The manufacturers don't even include a headphone jack on some models.

Robert—

When he said "older Yamaha receiver" I figured it was probably an antique like mine, which doesn't support such fancy stuff as 5.1 surround sound. But, I know, DAA.

Maybe Marty will clarify.
