Fan operation, iMac - clyde - 04-23-2016 Bought a 480 GB SSD and had it professionally installed in an iMac 10,1 Thursday. The technician did not install OWC's temperature sensor on the HD. He said there was too little room for the sensor. Instead he used the original temp sensor. Machine works well, and faster than before. But the fan now runs continuously. The fan hardly ever ran with the original, rotating HD. It doesn't sound like jets leaving O'Hare, but the novice suspects something is out of kilter. Could the problem be related to the temp sensor? Opinions, please… Re: Fan operation, iMac - bazookaman - 04-23-2016 https://www.eidac.de/ Re: Fan operation, iMac - clay - 04-23-2016 clyde wrote: B.S. The sensor is not large. And he replaced a 3.5" drive with a 2.5" SSD. plenty of room for it. My mistake. He said there was too little room for the temp sensor wire harness. Re: Fan operation, iMac - clay - 04-23-2016 I still call B.S. There's plenty of room for the entire apparatus. I've done it myself. It is an extra $40 in parts for the OWC sensor, but one of the only ways to deal with the sensor issue, i believe. You may also be able to short out the sensor cable so the fan doesn't run. Didn't mattkime do that here on MRF? Re: Fan operation, iMac - jdc - 04-23-2016 21" or 27"? I dont know what a 10,1 iMac is, but if you say "late 2007 24" iMac" i do.. =) there was enough room for both 3.5 and 2.5 in my 2010 27" imac. Re: Fan operation, iMac - C(-)ris - 04-23-2016 He needs to use the OWC cable. I'm not sure what his issue was. The cable works and fits with plenty of room. I've installed a few and never an issue. You can watch the OWC video to see how it should be installed. Re: Fan operation, iMac - Article Accelerator - 04-23-2016 clyde wrote: Could the problem be related to the temp sensor? Yes. He may have been bent out of shape because I told him I would install the OS and restore/migrate the other stuff—who knows? Chose to have it done professionally because after watching the video I realized that 1) a pro could do it faster than I; and 2) I could use the time on the gaggle of other jobs that need attention. Now I'm waffling about taking it back to him to correct his mistake, or tearing it apart and installing the OWC sensor and harness myself… Re: Fan operation, iMac - JoeH - 04-23-2016 10,1 would be a Late 2009 iMac. Apple used two identifiers for the Late 2009 iMac's, 10,1 for the Core 2 Duo models and 11,1 for those with Core i5 and i7 CPU's. The 2010 iMac dropped the Core 2 Duo processors entirely and used i3's instead for the low end of the lineup. |
