Dropbox "Project Infinite" - ka jowct - 04-28-2016 Hope this becomes a feature of the Pro 1 TB accounts eventually. Re: Dropbox "Project Infinite" - Gareth - 04-28-2016 This will make MacBook Retinas and Airs more appealing to those of us with 500GB+ DropBox folders, since those machines top out at 512GB. Re: Dropbox "Project Infinite" - davester - 04-29-2016 Seems like a no-brainer. I'm wondering why it hasn't been thought of before. Re: Dropbox "Project Infinite" - ka jowct - 04-29-2016 Yeah, it needs to be there for everyone who has more than the basic small, free account. Far easier than setting account preferences for every laptop or small boot drive if you have a 1TB account. Re: Dropbox "Project Infinite" - bazookaman - 04-29-2016 So if you have a 500mb image file, you have to "download" it when you open it in PS, then "upload" it when you save it? I guess if it's a big file and you use it a lot you'd store it locally. Re: Dropbox "Project Infinite" - davemchine - 04-29-2016 Sounds like a great idea. iDisk did this way back in the day. That would have been 2008 ish? Anyway, I really like the idea. It would eliminate the need to use the selective sync option in dropbox. Re: Dropbox "Project Infinite" - Robert M - 04-29-2016 Ka, I like the idea on one level. However, I can also see it being problematic for at least two reasons on a different level. Imagine I'm using Dropbox Infinite. I've got 8 gigs worth of data stored in the infinite folder. I want clone my drive via Carbon Copy Cloner to a backup drive. To simplify, the files stored in the infinite folder are kind of like aliases to the originals that are located in the cloud. How will Carbon Copy Cloner handle them? Downloading each file prior to copying it is going to greatly increase clone times. 'course, an infinite folder will also make local backups of the files all the more critical. This kind of relates to the CCC question. How will the machine handle plain ol' copies of the files in the infinite folder from the drive to another drive? Robert Re: Dropbox "Project Infinite" - space-time - 04-30-2016 'course, an infinite folder will also make local backups of the files all the more critical. This kind of relates to the CCC question. How will the machine handle plain ol' copies of the files in the infinite folder from the drive to another drive? if the files are in the cloud (and if Dropbox has serious backup schemes, which I bet they have, and if they are still in business when you need the files), local backup becomes less critical. but I don't like my files in the cloud. several reasons: -I don't like a 3rd party to have access to my private files. I do keep images and other non-private files in Dropbox, and even 1Password, but that is heavily encrypted. -companies can be hacked, and if Dropbox is hacked, someone can steal my files. they could see my pictures, tax returns, etc. if they manage to steal Dropbox files not, the only sensitive information is in 1Password, other is non critical. I could encrypt all files, but that is another hassle that I don't need. -download takes time, upload is even slower. I want my files on my SSD, or at least on my local network where I can download from another machine at 300 Mbps (wifi) or Gigabit (wired). my Comcast connection is only 25 Mbps. -bandwidth. I use already 200-250 GB per month as it is. Re: Dropbox "Project Infinite" - Robert M - 04-30-2016 Space, Anytime your data is in the cloud, a local backup is 100% critical. Doesn't matter how many backups the cloud provider does regularly. Same goes if it's a reputable company like Dropbox. It's always critical to have a local copy of your data, i.e. the provider goes kablooey, lose access to the Internet, etc. Robert Re: Dropbox "Project Infinite" - ka jowct - 04-30-2016 Exactly. I see this as an extra safety net, to supplement multiple local backups. And nice for folks stuck with skimpy laptop configurations who don't want to carry an external drive around. |
