Do any of you have a counter height dining table? - Buck - 09-22-2016
My wife and I tried the one at Costco for a minute, and it seemed quite nice. Unless we get a very large one, it would be awkward for large holiday dinners, when we have to put 2 tables together.
I bet some of you have experiences with this?

I have one -- it works well for my needs. I am a single guy, though. Don't know how well it would work in a family environment.

Just two quick thoughts.
Do you have pre-teen kids? They might have a bit of trouble with the height.
And the selection of chairs is much more limited in case you decide to replace them in the future.

If you need to put two tables together and don't care about the looks, you can easily make sleeves that the feet of the shorter table slide into. I did it with a folding card table in 20 minutes. Cut the head off a long screw, chucked it up in a drill, ran it into a broom handle. Used a sharp knife to whittle the broom handle down so it would fit into the leg, then cut the piece to length. Repeat 3 more times. With wooden legs, just get PVC pipe big enough to slip over the leg, then cut the broom handle to length and slide it in the PVC pipe below the table leg.

regular height dining table but have two stool sitting spot at end of peninsula counter.
The informal space is quite handy and gets used a lot ( as a junk collection spot too unfortunately ) but still like a regular dining table ( plus it comes handy as a temporary holding spot for the junk that collects on the counter ) :-)

We have a counter height that came with 6 chairs and is 54" square when extended. (The center folds underneath to make it rectangular, but we usually leave it extended because the dining room is almost square, and we don't need or use the resulting extra floor space.) We picked up an extra 2 chairs about a year later just in case, but we have only had to use them a handful of times in the 15 years we have owned it, and 8 chairs is a pretty tight fit anyway.
It's worked well for our family of 3, though. The only "incident" we had was one of my nephews (maybe 4 or 5 at the time) falling while getting out of the chair because he was used to standard height tables, and expected the floor to be much nearer than it was. Our own 5-year-old has never had any such problems since he has grown up with it.

Standard dining table is about 30" and kitchen counters 36". Standard chair seat is about 17". A 36" table would I think would require chairs to match. Put some blocks under you existing table and give it a try.

Mrs. cbelt3 and I prefer regular height. Mrs. cbelt3 is a bit vertically challenged, and no longer likes her feet flopping in the air when she sits. She will, however, giggle girlishly and kick her feet in the air briefly. :emoticon-animal-004:
