Ordered Crucial 525GB SSD per jdc's post below, and gonna use it to replace ailing internal drive in BIL/SIL's C2D iMac referenced in my WTF? El Crap post further below, after pre-installing Mavs.
Today's question; does a 24" alu C2D iMac need some sort of a bracket to mount the SSD where the old 3.5" HDD currently resides? As postulated in the subject line, if so, which one?

I put an SSD in a 24" C2D that I was passing along to my parents. I'm sure this will be frowned upon, but I used a couple of pieces of 3M packing tape to secure it. Still going strong 2 years later.

Nah, no bracket. Tape is fine.
the SSD weighs bitterly nothing, maybe like 2.5-3 ounces --where as a typical HDD is like a pound and a half.
I did have to install SMC fan control in my 24" AL iMac (2007) -- but doesnt seem to work like I would want.... you might consider OWC temp cable. Think its $30... which seem kinda pricey for an old iMac... but depends on how much the fan might annoy them. Fortuanlyely for me, its my oldest daughters, and she only runs it for short periods of time and always has bluetooth headphones on...

If you do get a bracket, get the one with the offset bridge board that mimics the original 3.5" connector positioning like the Newertech our host makes. The cables have very little slack and the aren't long enough to accommodate the simpler ones.
Al iMacs that predate the late-2009 model have external drive temp sensors that are easily transferred to a new drive.
The iFixit instructions give a lot of unnecessary steps relating to unplugging the harness from the board and so forth that can be skipped.
Just peel the whole thing off the old drive and let the cable dangle before attaching the sensor to the new drive.

This should work - without involving a bridge board. I just installed an SSD in 2008 iMac by adapting a 3.5 drive sled, but this would have been easier.

Don't use the ifixit guide. Use OWCs.
Watch it first.
There's *plenty* of slack in the SATA cable -- just plug the drive and done.
I can't stress enough the difference in the weight of the 2 drives -- it's huge. A 1/2" square of 2 sided tape will hold the SSD for life.
I've done a few now, could probably make the swap in under 5 minutes. Don't even need suction cups for the glass. Just pry up where the camera is with a credit card the pull it off with your fingers.
