Best Concert DVD(s)? - pinkoos - 09-29-2006
Just wondering what people think are some of the best concert DVDs they've seen/heard recently?
You can base your answers on any criteria you'd like (video quality, audio quality, performance, music type, etc.).
Personally, I think concert DVDs are the only types of DVDs worth buying/owning. They are the only ones I would watch again and again. I never was one to watch movies over and over again and, thus, never have a reason to own a movie DVD.
Some of the concert DVDs I own (or have rented) and that I like:
-The Who at the Royal Albert Hall
-Roxy Music at the Apollo
-U2 Slane Castle
-U2 Chicago
-U2 Boston
-SRV Live El Mocambo
-SRV Live Montreaux
-Cult Music without Fear (though Ian Astbury's "singing" [if that's what you want to call it] not up to par that evening)
-AC/DC Donington
That's all I can think of right now.

S&M - Cool audio option - Band only, Symphony only, or together.

I like the 2 disc Zeppelin DVD. It really puts "The Song Remains the Same" to shame. SRV on Austin City Limits is another real goodun.

The Black Crowes "Freak 'N' Roll" DVD was released last year. It's a recording of three shows at the classic Fillmore Theater. Interestingly, because California prohibits smoking, the footage is clear as can be. The music is a masterpiece, but the video footage is fantastic as well--especially in 16:9 format.

Apparently, there's a separate Austin City Limits DVD that's only available as part of a 3 CD/1 DVD set that contains a few additonal songs from that performance...apparently, people who've seen it say it's actually better than the original DVD that was released:

the best non-commercial live concert DVD i've watched all year is Ween at the Allgood Festival; it's a 3-camera edit, quite amazing for an 'amateur' production.
generally, i download fan-created live DVDs more than buying them; i find many commercial releases to be over-edited affairs... but that's me.

I'm not a big concert DVD guy, but I do love Kraftwerk's Minimum/Maximum Live. The 5.1 mix is amazing: almost better than being there in person.

Los Lonely Boys - the free concert they did in Texas. You can see the traffic behind them slow down as cars approach the venue. Just the sweetest sounds from 3 guys since Jimmy's Experience and Cream.
