Ran out of startup disk space on 10.4.8 update, now KP at startup - blusubaru - 09-29-2006

Well, I think I shot myself in the foot with my MacBook. I forgot that I had meant to clean house on the startup drive and clear off some room before doing the Pro Apps update and 10.4.8 update. It was installng the last bit of the OS as I was hurridly trying to find things to delete when it ran out of disk space. The finder locked up trying to empty the trash, and I got a red exclamation mark on Software Update. Now, every restart results in a KP before the OS even loads. FW disk mode to my G5 iMac lets me access everything just fine, DU run on MacBook via FW Target checks out all good, starting MacBook from OS DVD and running DU there checks out fine. What else can I try?

Empty the trash?

No, I can't even boot the machine. It kernel panics.

Boot from startup DVD?

It will boot from OS DVD but DU there finds nothing wrong. I don't exactly want to do the erase/install just yet in case it can be resolved some other way. I'm not even sure that would fix the problem.

Startup from install DVD. You said you can do that.

Clean up your drive.

Start over installing the OS that's came with the DVD. Update.

If you didn't have enough room for the 10.4.8 update, you were already woefully short on space for a swap file. You need to manage your resources better.

Have you deleted extra stuff from the drive at this point (via firewire)? That's what I'd do first. Get at least a couple of gb free. After that, see what happens. You might have to reinstall 10.4 from the install dvd and then go from there.

I have cleaned off 2gb of space on the startup. It was my iPhoto library that had gotten out of control, I wasn't watching it.

Elmo, when you say "start over" are you implying an erase/install?

Well, I guess it could end up with that. But first, do an archive & install. That will require more space, but is the cleanest *and* least intrusive way to handle the situation you find yourself in right now.

Booted from the OS CD, I tried to do an Archive and Install, it won't allow for it. So it looks as if the OS is all fubar. I can Install Mac OS X "Installs for the first time" or Erase and Install.
