But not by the usual method. For some reason, my Freebie Smurf would not boot from the Tiger disk. I had replaced the stock DVD-ROM drive with the stock combo DVD-ROM/CDRW from my MDD. It reads DVDs fine, and burns CDs, so I'm not sure why the Tiger DVD, which mounted OK in this drive, did not want to boot. I did some digging online and found a few reports of problems getting B&Ws to boot from the Tiger DVD, but not much in the way of solutions for the problem..

So I installed Tiger on a drive in my G4/AGP, and then puled the drive and installed it in the Smurf. The Smurf booted right up from the Tiger drive.

Performance is not bad, considering the age of the machine. It had 576MB of RAM in it when I got it, and I added the 64MB DIMM that I pulled from the Curbside Indigo iMac, so it's now at 640. Skimpy amount of RAM compared to my other towers, but it cost me nothing, always a good thing.

Still buffing Smurfs I see

I just can't stop.

But at least this time, I'm not spending a penny. Or at least not many pennies. I am awaiting the arrival of $6 worth of thermal grease so that I can put in the G4 ZIF that I pulled from the carrier card that used to be in my 9600. The poor old 9600 is making do with its old Powerlogix G3/375/1MB (running at 400MHz) once again, and it's as snappy as it will ever need to be.
