Anyone buy a MacPro? - vision63 - 10-01-2006

I can't believe anyone here using their personal funds to buy one and fill it with RAM. $308 dollars for 1gb at Crucial. Are my eyes deceiving me?

A lot of folks have a real need, why is that bad?
$308 is really not bad at all. Most folks spend that in a month at CharBux, never mind $10 a day for lunch.

Yeah, some RAM prices have spiked 30% to 50% since the end of June.

I'm sure a lot of people have a real need. Don't know what CharBux is, but I doubt I'd spend $300 dollars there per month. I was hoping you'd tell me I could use some kind of regular ram and that this was only "recommended" ram by Apple.

$308 dollars for ONE gigabyte of ram is quite a spike. No way they're gonna sell masses of these machines. They must have something else up their sleeves.

CharBux = StarBucks (Yes, many folks do spend hundreds a month there)

Too late, Apple is already selling masses of them.
Several of my customers have already purchased dozens.
I don't know where your shopping, but $308 is way high, just priced a 1GB RAM for the Mac Pro at $239.

Institutional customers yes. Do you know an individual? Again, has anyone "here" purchased one? I search for MacPro and Leader and came up wiith a blank. And $200 dollars for one gig is still hella-high.

If the RAM used by the MacPro were the same RAM used in most PCs it would be very expensive indeed. The MacPros however use a different type of RAM. I'm sure that someone here can elaborate on the differences. I just remember that they were different somehow. Apple is always on the bleeding edge with this stuff, and we pay a price for that. If they are the only company using it in any substantial quantities they still won't get a good price. If Apple is the only company using it, then 3rd part RAM sellers are going to be selling even less of it. Hence, the higher price.

They "have" to offer customers a reasonable tower configuration. 2K should get you everything you need.

Yes, as of yesterday, nine friends of mine have purchased MacPro's.
Greg the Dog Sitter has one.

This board is really not the litmus test for those types of purchases. Not many big spenders here.
You need to go to forums where lots of audio/video, and rendering is done. Also, Adobe is sitting on its ass, and hasn't UniBinned its applications yet, so most photoshop folks aren't buying yet. If you need the power, you pay the price. I have seen video render times drop from hours, to minutes, the price is well worth it, if your apps will use it. Is the price hurting your business? Can you even make a case for what your using now, or are you just complaining?
What are you using now?
What are you doing with it?

I am in the process of setting one up right now. There were a couple of firmware updates required. I added 8Gb from our sponsor for a total of 9GB. Life is short so enjoy it while you can. Since I just got quad 3.0 GHz you can be pretty sure that 8x 4GHz are right around the corner.
