USB2.0 - RonT - 10-06-2006 Anybody know if a USB 2.0 Pci card will work at the higher, USB 2.0 speed, in a G4/733 Digital Audio. Or will it be limited to the slower USB 1.1 speed? Tia Ron Re: USB2.0 - Carnos Jax - 10-06-2006 Higher. It only depends on the card. Re: USB2.0 - BigGuynRusty - 10-06-2006 Speedy, Speedy, Speedy! What makes you think it would be limited to USB 1.1? OS Version? Anything over OS8, and 10,2 (or was that .3?) should work fine. BGnR Re: USB2.0 - Silencio - 10-06-2006 Actually, there is no support for USB 2.0 in classic Mac OS. USB 2.0 cards and devices will only work at USB 1.1 speeds AFAIK. I don't think Apple shipped a machine that could both boot natively into Mac OS 9 and had USB 2.0 ports (or Firewire 800 ports, for that matter). 10.2.x is the minimum for high-speed, 480Mbps USB 2.0 support. Re: USB2.0 - Jem - 10-06-2006 Watch your "Sleep of Death" issues though... which sometimes (often?!?) occur when a machine sleeps while storage devices are connected to the USB 2.0 PCI card. To avoid, unmount and remove said storage devices before the Mac sleeps. Re: USB2.0 - wickedsteve - 10-06-2006 Plug in a USB 1 device and then it will be limited in speed. At least that is how mine work. I avoid the sleep of death by not putting my Mac to sleep at all. Better for it to be folding instead of sleeping anyway. To avoid, unmount and remove said storage devices before the Mac sleeps. Do you mean unmount, or disconnect? I would have to disconnect various USB 1 and 2 devices if I wanted my computer to wake from deep sleep. So no sleep here: on or off, but never sleeping. So no sleep here: on or off, but never sleeping. Unmount, and disconnect. But (in my case) only those devices that are mounted as storage devices (External hard disks, thumb drives, etc.) I have other devices like scanners and printers, bluetooth adapters, etc. That stay connected to the USB 2.0 card all the time with no problems. You'll need to do a process of elimination to figure out what your problem devices are, and then remember to *detach* those devices before sleep is permitted. Like wickedsteve, I don't let my computer auto-sleep. If I want to sleep it, I do that manually after making sure no offending devices are still attached. And of course, items plugged into the original built-in USB 1.1 ports need not be worried about at all Hope that helps! Re: USB2.0 - ka jowct - 10-09-2006 I'd rather skip deep sleep than fiddle around disconnecting my media reader from the USB 2 card. If you have an external hub, I expect it's more convenient to disconnect potential coma-inducing devices as needed. |
