I have decided that I dislike Nikon SLR cameras - pRICE cUBE - 02-09-2017

I switched to Nikon after a bad run of Canon cameras that had faulty and unreliable autofocus. I own 5 Nikon DSLR cameras. As much as I tried to embrace Nikon, after roughly 8 years of full Nikon I have decided I just don't like it. Are Nikons great tools? Yes, Can I accomplish what I need to and keep clients happy? Yes. I just don't like the way the cameras operate. The Canon layout, the feel of the buttons, the shape of the grips just feels better. I feel like Nikon is like using a PC and Canon is using a Mac. On a Canon I shoot with intuition and feel, with Nikon I constantly feel that I am fumbling with the buttons. The Nikon skin tones are never flattering to portrait clients so it takes work to get them right on the computer. At times, the tones are too honest and accurate.

There, I had to get it off my chest.

That all being said, I am in too deep into Nikon to leave now. Unless their cameras start a bad run of terrible AF units, I won't be switching any time soon. The only Nikon I love is the F4 film camera. It is darn near perfect in my hands.

Not sure if things have changed much, but we have a D90 here at work that I never liked using either. Used a 5Dmkii for a while which I much preferred, and I am forever partial to my A550.

That's how l feel between my Sony's and Nikon's. I do all of my personal, travel, art photography with my Sony Alpha DSLRs and they just feel right in my hands and I can access every setting by intuition. At the day job, in the studio, the gear was supplied by the client so it's Nikon. And like you said, it does everything I need, and has great image quality but it just doesn't feel right in my hands.

One reason that I have stayed with Pentax is that they have all felt "right" in my hands.

Back when I was a pro, in film, I had the exactly the same response to the Nikon and Canon bodies--I could get great images with either, but the Canon felt right.

Oddly, back when I was a pro I felt just the opposite. We switched the staff to Canon because of image quality (no argument, Canon was way ahead in the early 2000's). I just never cared for the Canon ergonomics, or menu system. Nikon always just made sense to me while Canon was like dealing with Windows - I could do it but it was never instinctual.

Why not switch? You have a lot of Nikon equipment and yes, it would be a pain but you could start a sell-off of your Nikon stuff and buy (used mostly) Canon stuff.

Good luck to you. Both formats are excellent but both have issues.

I used Canon in the 1990s with manual focus film lenses, but switched to Nikon because Canon refused to allow their older manual focus lenses to work on their EOS system.

It's several years later, and I am very happy with Nikon, although the switch required all new equipment which was expensive.

Maybe you could pick up some Canon equipment for portraits, since that's where you are most frustrated with Nikon. Over time you could replace your equipment for other uses.

To this day, I still sometimes turn the focus and zooms the old Canon way!

So make a living on the other side of the lens for a while.

I don't want to reset my muscle memory zooming the Canon direction. Maybe if this new Tamron 70-200 2.8 has fast enough AF, I might think about it.

I still feel shaky about Canon AF, the 1D III and 5D2 haunt me. I know Canon has made advancements but they really blew it by denying there was an issue for so long.

If the D4 drops in price a bit more I will probably stay with Nikon. I took a big hit selling my Canon gear, I don't want to go through that again.
