Stolen ID - kap - 02-11-2017

17 cousin found out recently her SSN has been stolen by someone who has used it to work at various jobs in San Francisco. A family friend is trying to help her cleaning up the mess. Still, lots of work ahead. From what I have read it would take 3-5 years for her to be in the clear. Besides mortgage, loans, what other areas are affected by this ID theft?

* Oops, I meant "17 year old cousin"

Kap,

Could cause issues for apartment rental. Maybe affect entrance into a college. Might get screwed when applying for benefits of all sort. Tax fraud (lack of payment income taxes, etc). Medical fraud (bills, etc). Agita when opening an account with a utility, phone company, etc. Possibility have having to deal with debt generated by the fraudster. Possible get nailed for someone else's child support or alimony. Criminal provides your name and SS # when arrested. The list goes on.

This link may help a little bit:

It may be worth contacting an attorney or an organization that specializes in assisting with this kind of issue.

Robert

An illegal immigrant maybe? It's really crappy when the IRS knows this is happening but doesn't contact the original owner of the number.

Too much investigative work. It's easier just to arrest the "criminal" even if s/he is not the right one.

I found this link at the Social Security Admin:

Cousin already reported the problem.

What a mess that shouldn't be allowed to happen by banks, IRS, etc. They are the ones at fault I think. I've never heard of this thing happening in places like Japan. Might have, but I've never heard of it.

Re: Stolen ID - Blurb - 02-12-2017

I and my husband experienced ID theft in 2015 & 2016 via the IRS website. They had put a link to pull up old transcripts of your prior tax forms, but it was not secure and scammers used it to get access to many peoples SS#, address, DOB, etc. They made a mess of our taxes the past 2 years. And have been using my husbands info for credit cards in the past 6-10 months which we just found out when I was checking our credit reports (because of this). I had put freezes on all 3 of my credit reports and thought I did so for my husband, but apparently I did not finalize the freezes for him. BTW, amazing how much incorrect info (including the scammers addresses and phone #'s!) I found on the TransUnion report. Nothing is safe anymore essentially.

Interestingly, they have been paying their bills on these credit cards and even closed one account after paying it off! WTF?? It's gotta be those damn Russians! :patriot:
