Refillable HP Ink Carts, and Auto Update - Microman - 02-15-2017

Was having trouble getting my printer to print, and when I loaded this refilled cart yellow cart from about 6 months ago, it wasn't getting recognized.

Luckily a quick stop by Costco, and they were reshipped and all is fine.

They suggested I turn off auto update, but I can't see where that would be

Running Sierra on 2012 MBP, and have an HP Officejet 6700 Premium.

All seems good now.

But is there a place to turn off updates?

Brother owner but I'll take a guess since no one else has replied.

The HP AIO could have 1 or more of the following installed when you set it up:
  1. an Options app in the System Prefs (Printers & Scanners)
  2. a standalone "Control Center" app (Brother's method)
  3. A Settings option buried on the AIO's webpage

Not sure about other brands, but on older Brother AIOs a firmware update
can wipe-out the ability to use generic & refilled carts!

    Micro,

Open the printer's configuration web page from the embedded web server. You do this going to printers in system prefs, double-clicking on the printer in the window. The printers print queue window will upen. In that, click settings and then click show printer web page. Once the printer's web page opens, you'll find the auto update setting under Web Services in the "update" section.

FWIW, I doubt auto update is the source of the issue. but, that's how you would turn the feature off.

FWIW, I have multiple HP printers and the only time the issue you've described cropped up is when using a bad cartridge from a refiller. Another possible source is that someone enabled a setting in the cartridge itself that makes it usable in only their specific printer. Doesn't matter if someone else has the same model and wants to use the cartridge. It won't work. A refiller may not realize the cartridge has been set this way prior to refilling it and selling the refilled cartridge.

Some machines, like my office's OfficeJet Pro 8620 can recognized a cartridge that was previously used in a different printer. The 8620 and our Officejet Pro 8100 use the same type of cartridge. Occasionally, I've had to swap cartridges around and that's when I found this out. The Officejet Pro 8620 is more finicky about cartridges than the 8100. It had an issue with a magenta cartridge. I took the cartridge from the 8620 and swapped it with the one from the 8100. The 8620 let me know the swapped cartridge was previously used. The 8100 didn't notify me of anything,

All of these ink carts have been either at my house or purchased new from Costco. So no 3rd party mess up. I would guess. I go to SHOW PRINTER WEBpage, and it starts to open another tab, but it never completely opens, so is just white.

has a URL at top of safari: http://hpf0921c51d909.local.

So the carts are refilled at Costco, not new

    Micro,

You said refilled cartridge. So, I'm confused. Did you refill the cartridge? Purchase a refilled cartridge from Costo? Refilled is not new. At best, it's refurbished. Doesn't matter if it is an actually HP cartridge. Refilled isn't the same as brand-new out of the box OEM.

BTW, try a different browser. Safari sometimes has issues with web sites including the embedded web server in HP printers.

Ok, so as I download Firefox, I try once more to Show Printer Webpage, And it Opened?

    Who knows.

Under Web Services it does have a product update on the left, and when selected there is an OK, button, that when click says that I am up to date. Nothing I see about Auto Update.

    Micro,

That's where it was located when i checked my Officejet Pro 8620. What you saw is what I found when I checked my Officejet Pro 8100. The autoupdate may be in a different section of the web server or your particular machine may not have the option described by the drone at Costco.

Also, like I asked, you said refilled cartridge in your original post. So, I'm confused. Did you refill the cartridge? Purchase a refilled cartridge from Costo?
