I just clipped a photo to the desktop. A minute later I forgot how I did it. I know 4 is involved.

Most of the time you can just click on it to highlight and drag it to the desktop.
You can also right click and "save to desktop"

Panopticon is right, if by "clipped" you mean "took a screenshot". Also known as a screen capture. There are a lot of little tweaks you can make to the shortcuts to capture just a given window, save it to the clipboard instead of the desktop, etc, etc…

shift commant 3 is the whole desktop, shift command 4 allows you to select with a little target that is the cursor.
