I got a cherry keyboard MX 3.0 and... - space-time - 03-01-2017

it is nice but noisy. I doubt co-workers will tolerate it. I tried it tonight, I like it, but I am afraid tomorrow I need to go back to the Dell keyboard. Sad

There are over a dozen styles of switches. With a little searching you should be able to find a keyboard that gives nearly the identical feel without all the noise.

Speaking of noisy, I have a feeling that Jony Ive must have been trying to model the audio feedback on the new MacBook Pros after the Cherry MX 3.0.

Space,

I've had people complain about the noise from my machine-gun style of hunt and pecking since the days of Apple's Extended Keyboard I and Extended Keyboard II. Heck, people complained when I typed on the keyboard that came with a Mac 128K and a Mac Plus! And, I've ignored every one of them.

If my fingers like a particular keyboard, I'm going to keep using it. Period. Complaining about the noise isn't going to make a difference at all. That's why I have a Matias Tactile Pro at home and one at my office and people know better than to complain about it because it isn't going to make a difference at all.

Robert

Maybe they don't complain because you're the boss?

Clay,

Nopes. I've used a noisy keyboard since the early '80s - long before I become the owner of my own company. The loudest and most numerous complaints came from college roommates and, while in the midst of college and shortly afterwards, people who lived in the apartment next door. 'course, my college roommates were and ginormous source of agita. So much so, I was forced to change dorm rooms and then eventually move off campus. And, they were long before I purchased the Mac I had in college. Prior to moving off campus, I took great pleasure in the fact that my typing annoyed the crap out of them.

It's amazing how robust those old AEK I's and AEK II's are. I have an AEK I that has been worn down to shiny spots wherever hands and fingers touch it. It's like many badges of honor that it proudly displays. After some recent downsizing, it's been moved to a storage bin, and the Matias Tac Pro has assumed full time duty for the time being, but the Tac Pro is noticeably noisier, so there may be some legitimacy to the gripes of Robert's minions. Heck, I even gripe to myself about how noisy the Tac Pro is. If the Cherry MX is on the same order of magnitude, any gripes about noise are probably warranted...
