Can any DSLR camera buffs help? - h linamen - 03-02-2017

Having problems with My Canon EOS Rebel XSi DSLR camera and hope someone here is an expert with suggestions or maybe even had the same problem. The camera works fine as far as taking photos, but the LCD screen is not properly functioning. For example when the camera is turned on it is always supposed to display the “shooting Settings Screen” first which it does not…. just a black screen. I can hit the button to display a photo and the photo displays fine and can cycle through multiple shots. However, the review feature after taking a shot rarely works even though properly set for a 2 or 4 second review on the menu screen. Menu screens work properly otherwise, so the LCD screen is not shot. Intermittently I can get the “shooting Settings Screen” to display and then when I bring the camera up to my eyes to shoot it is supposed to go black so the bright screen isn’t blinding and one can look into the eye piece comfortably When that same screen does occasionally display, only part of the info is there, so my whole problem seems to revolve around certain electronic features with the display screen. I thought I might need a firmware upgrade, but there are no upgrades for this model. I’m wondering if I reload the 1.1.0 firmware if that might correct the problems? Anyone know? I will go to Canon support and forums but am hoping someone here has a quick idea of the problem. Being an older model I’m not sure a Canon repair will be cost justified. Thanks.

Is there a "Reset to factory defaults" option anywhere?

Yes, tried that but thanks for the suggestion.

Is there something obstructing the sensor that communicates with the lcd screen?

See if there is newer firmware available:

Thanks for the various suggestions, but I had already tried all those before posting. No newer firmware, no obstruction to the LCD sensor and I'd reset the factory defaults. I sure hate to give up on the camera as it works fine taking photos and even displays photos on the LCD screen. It just won't display the "shooting settings screen" (that's what the manual calls it) when it turns on, and after alternately punching the playback button multiple times, sometimes it will then display the "shooting settings screen" without the top area showing info.
