Car and cats are in WI! (part of the 'how do i leave nyc?' series) - mattkime - 03-27-2017

I loaded up the car with valuables I wouldn't hand to movers - my negatives, prints, and framed artwork. and a bike. (because i had room) oh, and the cats. the cats got double dinner since they'd eat little the next day.

I started off at 7am and picked up my co-driver. I found someone on craigslist who was looking to go to chicago. He was a young guy just getting back from his 'birth right' trip to israel - but he did his a bit differently as he spent time in Palestine. His facebook profile checked out (particularly the part where his mom asked how he was getting from nyc to chicago). I needed a co-driver if i had any hope of making it to chicago in one day, let alone my parents place a few hours northward.

The cats were unhappy. This was expected. They were actually pretty quiet. Then we hit new jersey, only an hour into the trip, when one of the cats pukes. Thankfully cleanup only took about 15 minutes. It was pretty much the worst thing that could happen but it wasn't that bad. We were back on the road.

I found a deep appreciation for cruise control.

For the whole trip we only took about an hours worth of breaks. This would not have been possible by myself.

He had a heavy foot which i didn't mind.

The end of the trip really started to wear on me which was pretty much expected. Tense shoulders became a powerful headache. But I was soooo close. Its remarkable how much easier driving is in familiar territory.

The cats were unloaded upon arriving home. One cat immediately explored, ate, and used the litterbox. The other cat (the pukey one) took up residence under the bed. He'd eat treats as long as his rear quarters could stay covered.

I was incoherent until falling asleep and spent much of today recovering.

I'm very happy with the car.

Mayor Bloomberg didn't kick you out like he did Larry David, did he?

Awesome. :driving:

I use cruise control pretty much all the time -- even just for 10 minute trip up the freeway -- set it an forget it.

Nicely done ! I've traveled too much distance solo to take it really seriously, but it does make me twitchy. Cool that you could find a ride buddy.

I think my most epic commute was from Cleveland to St. Louis in 5 1/2 hours in a turbocharged Saab. Four college kids, all stoned out of our minds the whole way, and the whole trip was done at night. No, we never reached Bat Country.

Glad you and da kitties arrived safely. Only one puke attack was a pretty good score. Big Grin

Glad your trip went well. Last week, I drove solo 2500+ miles in just over 72 hours (Long Island, NY ~ Tucson, AZ) in my Super-C RV. I was comatose for two days.

Sounds like a pretty good trip from here. I'm glad it went so well and glad that the kitties didn't scream the whole way like some I've known.
