adware on (slightly) older computer - davemchine - 05-23-2017 My grandmother is running 10.8.5 and today she was infected with adware. I tried to install malwarebytes but it requires 10.9. Then I installed ESET, which I run at home, and had to leave due to my schedule. Will ESET be adequate to clean up adware or is it likely I will need another tool? If so, what runs on 10.8.5? Thanks for any advice. ps. I do not wish to upgrade the OS on her computer as she has dementia and I don't want to confuse her. Re: adware on (slightly) older computer - ka jowct - 05-23-2017 There is not enough diff between ML and Mavericks to cause a problem with familiarity, IMHO. She would be safer online with Mavs. The precursor to MalwareBytes might be able to fix the current problem. It's called Adware Medic. Re: adware on (slightly) older computer - michaelb - 05-24-2017 good luck getting that fixed. Was she running as an administrator and/or does she know the admin password? I would change that and set up her up with a user account. I didn't think adware or any malware could install itself without admin privileges. Re: adware on (slightly) older computer - Carm - 05-26-2017 Do you remote login to her computer? I had to do that to my inlaws computer instead of driving over all the time. They are 20minutes away on the freeway. Saved me tons of time and gas. Re: adware on (slightly) older computer - decay - 05-26-2017 there's an older version of MWB that runs on 10.8 Re: adware on (slightly) older computer - Racer X - 05-27-2017 and here it is! https://data-cdn.mbamupdates.com/web/MBAM-Mac-1.2.4.584.dmg |
