Hiding it in candy supposedly is nothing new but smarties Sweetarts apparently is.

Heroin cut with fentanyl is causing the cops to have to use double and triple doses of narcan around here. Nasty stuff fentanyl.

There was a case here in NE Ohio where a police officer was exposed to fentanyl after a drug bust... he got some of it on his uniform. And later on, brushed it off with an ungloved hand thinking it was dust. And in short order went into overdose. Since the police all carry narcan now, he didn't die, but it was close.

That stuff is pure unmitigated poison.

Fentanyl is some wicked dangerous stuff. It has its uses, and is indispensable in the OR or on the battlefield.

I have 2 shooting partners, one a retired SEAL, and another retired SWCC. Both have medic training, and have needed to administer fentanyl lollipops in the field. When you see how it can help someone in agony, you would understand why it exists.

This stuff on the street? Pure evil.

Before I had my hip replaced, I accidentally joked to my PA that since I had graduated from codeine to morphine, what did I have to do to get fentanyl? I got a 10 minute lecture on pain meds and addiction.

It's not even the worst morphine analog. Sufentanil is ~5 to 10x more potent by weight than fentanyl (which is in turn 100x more potent that morphine). But carfentanil is about 20x more potent than sufentanil. The LD50 for fentanyl in monkeys is ~0.03mg/kg. No one knows what the human LD50 is, but extrapolating, 3 milligrams of fentanyl (about the weight of a sesame seed) would kill a full sized man half the time, and so it would take roughly 30 micrograms of carfentanil (half the weight of a grain of salt) to do the same.

The Russians used a carfentanil mist (delivered via the HVAC system, presumably) to incapacitate Chechen hostage takers in a Moscow theater in 2002. Clever, except it also offed 125 of the hostages from acute respiratory depression.

I remember when the Russians did that. I thought it was fentanyl. I had no idea there were stronger analogs. What for, elephants and whales?
