This is a tip that has worked wonders for me, hopefully it will do the same for you:

Get yourself a 4 oz. bar of Basis Sensitive Skin soap. (For cheapskates like me, Walmart has it for around $2.) Wet your face and then rub the bar all across your whiskers until you get a nice even coating of soap on your face. (You'll need a mirror for this, so shaving in the shower won't work.)

Then (and this is key) wet one hand and work the soap coating across your skin until you achieve a thick, slightly viscous layer of soap all across your whiskers.

Then get to shaving. You will be amazed at how the razor blade(s) just glides across your skin. No irritation, no nicks or bleeding, just a remarkably close and comfy shave.

I hate shaving, but this actually makes it kinda enjoyable.

Kind of like the old fashioned soap dish shaving soap my Dad used, and I used when I started shaving. I'll have to try that.

It probably has glycerine in it. Also try hair conditioner. If I want a really good shave that's what I use.

Done that. It feels smooth at the time, but it's not actually a very close shave.

Try hair conditioner instead. Helps to lift the hair away from the face as well as softening it for a cleaner cut.

A good herbal conditioner will also perk up your skin a bit.

Walmart also sells ShaveSecret. A tiny bottle with essential oils; runs ~ $4. Wash face and leave wet. 3 ~ 5 drops of SS rubbed onto hands and then, onto where you'll be shaving. SMOOTH. :oldfogey:

What I find exceptional about the Basis soap is the staying power of the soap layer on the skin, in my experience it remains there longer than a coating of hair conditioner after repeated swipes with the razor.

Basic Suave conditioner is what I use. Cheap and effective

That's what I use. I get a clear/white one that let's you see where you've shaved.

I often wash with soap and then rinse it off, use shaving cream and it's a good shave, better than only shave cream. I can't imagine using hair conditioner, that stuff is really thick and gooey.

I use a cheap lotion body wash. Works great on the whiskers, but then I shave in the shower.
