Coming in August: Solar Eclipse Mania - steve... - 07-01-2017 Areas along the total eclipse path are expecting thousands of visitors. On Monday, Aug. 21, a solar eclipse will be visible across America. The last time the contiguous United States saw a total eclipse was 1979, and it will be the first coast-to-coast solar eclipse in 99 years, reports The Associated Press. A partial eclipse will be visible throughout the United States, according to NASA. But within a band that the agency is calling the "path of totality" stretching from Oregon to South Carolina, viewers will witness a total eclipse. And in many of those places, an eclipse industry is already booming. NPR ![]() Re: Coming in August: Solar Eclipse Mania - NewtonMP2100 - 07-01-2017 .....a Solar Eclipse....of the heart.....?? Re: Coming in August: Solar Eclipse Mania - Mr Downtown - 07-01-2017 I've been trying to figure out a way to get to a site in the path of totality. Since there's a 31 percent chance it will be cloudy that day in Southern Illinois, I'm not crazy about the idea of renting a car and driving by myself six hours both ways for less than two minutes of cool. I could more easily justify going somewhere by bus or Amtrak, but the neatest option I found—a riverboat cruise from the St. Louis Arch—is sold out. Re: Coming in August: Solar Eclipse Mania - Racer X - 07-01-2017 Already have our reservations for a camping spot in E Oregon on private property. We are staying on Monday night too, so at least some of the people clear out. E Oregon is mostly 2 lane state highways. Then a trip to the John Day Fossil Beds, and obsidian and petrified wood collecting for 5 days. Then home to Seattle. That eclipse in '79 I saw in Seattle too. Re: Coming in August: Solar Eclipse Mania - Spiff - 07-01-2017 I live in the band of totality and have cancelled appointments around the time of totality so I can go up to the top of the parking deck and observe the eclipse Re: Coming in August: Solar Eclipse Mania - ztirffritz - 07-01-2017 Watch the Smarter Everyday eclipse video on YouTube. https://youtu.be/qc7MfcKF1-s He has an extended version here: https://youtu.be/twhZPxYVOe4 Re: Coming in August: Solar Eclipse Mania - SDGuy - 07-01-2017 My workplace has a counterpart location in Charleston, SC; this is the only time I can remember that I am envious of them. Now if only I could think of a plausible reason why I have a legitimate need to be there on August 21st for something work-related... Re: Coming in August: Solar Eclipse Mania - OWC Jamie - 07-01-2017 partial eclipse works for me - right in my own back yard. Re: Coming in August: Solar Eclipse Mania - rgG - 07-01-2017 Atlanta should have a pretty good partial, I am good with that. Re: Coming in August: Solar Eclipse Mania - Acer - 07-01-2017 Totality is within long day's round trip, so I've considered traveling--but the potential for cloudiness is high in much of the eastern US within that distance. We'll still get a memorable show in our back yard. |
