Can you run 1.5 miles in 15 minutes? I need advice - pRICE cUBE - 08-25-2017 I have a general goal to be able to run 1.5 miles in 15 minutes. I know you have to build up to it, especially if you are not a habitual runner. I tested myself out yesterday at the track. I needed to cover 6 laps on a 400M track. I tend to be bottom heavy, I do not have runner's legs. I have bulky legs. The following ensued: I was able to complete 2 without pausing. Then my side hurt and my feet felt as though they had multiple cramps all over. I covered the two laps in 7 minutes. Today my thighs are sore. Questions I have: If I continue this every other day or every 2-3 days, will that be an adequate frequency? Is a bottom heavy, chunky leg person like me ever going to hit 2400 meters in 15 minutes? How can I minimize foot cramping? Is there a trick not not having my side hurt? Re: Can you run 1.5 miles in 15 minutes? I need advice - GuyGene - 08-25-2017 50, that'd be fifty, years ago, I could. Re: Can you run 1.5 miles in 15 minutes? I need advice - TheTominator - 08-25-2017 Running, especially if you are carrying more weight than usual, is hard on your parts. If the goal is to build up endurance and muscles to be able to achieve the running goal, I suggest doing workouts with a low-impact exercise such as an elliptical machine instead of using running itself as the way to work up to the goal. You should be able to build up endurance and the muscles useful for running without as much impact. You can periodically check your progress with a run, but, unless you can run without feeling like you are risking injury or severe discomfort, I wouldn't use running as the primary training method. I think that having better developed musculature, especially in the legs, can help avoid joint damage when you do conduct impact exercises. I've heard that people with "bad knees" can improve their circumstances by improving their leg muscles so that the knee is being better supported by muscles and has less dependence on the cartilage for support. I expect that goes for other joints as well, e.g. hips, ankles. Edit: I think I can run 1.5 miles in 15 minutes, but I haven't specifically tried. My primary workout is working outside doing labor intensive tasks. Right now it is reclaiming the parts of our land that have become overgrown. That usually means pulling small trees, usually with hand tools and string trimming. Cleaning the barn, shoveling snow, harvesting firewood, and other laborious tasks keep me active when I'm away from my computer. Re: Can you run 1.5 miles in 15 minutes? I need advice - deckeda - 08-25-2017 If you're not already a runner, the question I'd have is, by when would you like to be able to do this? The easy answer might be, just slowly increase your distance / speed / endurance until you make it. I'm not a runner but have a friend who is, and what she goes through to reach her longer goals pretty much sells me on on taking it up. I'm also not a jogger, but know enough that they aren't the same. Re: Can you run 1.5 miles in 15 minutes? I need advice - Ombligo - 08-25-2017 Danny, You have to build up to it. Run the two laps until you can do so without pain, then increase to three, etc.. The stitch in your side will go away, then reappear when you up the distance, then go away, and return. Once you are at the mile mark, the second one comes easier. And yes, 3x a week is plenty. Don't try it everyday or you are likely to learn a new form of agony called Shin Splints. Re: Can you run 1.5 miles in 15 minutes? Re: Can you run 1.5 miles in 15 minutes? I need advice - bobinmurphy - 08-25-2017 Wow! If I've done my math right that's running at a pace of 6 MPH. Nice goal but you really need to work up to it and as The Tominator said, the best place to do that is on a low-impact elliptical machine. Running, especially if you're not conditioned and/or overweight can be murder on your knees and other body parts. That damage can last for the rest of your life. Nice to have goals, especially ones for getting into better shape physically, but approach it the right way. Re: Can you run 1.5 miles in 15 minutes? I need advice - OWC Jamie - 08-25-2017 I started walking first. Then mix in one lap of running, say, lap #2 or 3 of the 6 laps Then the next week run laps 2 and 4, walking the rest ( and this could be walking as fast as you can ) Then the next week laps 2, 4 and 6. Then the next week try one double lap running, eg: 2, 4, 5&6. Some would say run every other day until you've stretched and toned all your muscles but I go every day even if I only walk and get at least one lap around a 3.4 mile long circular road. I pulled muscles all the way up to my crotch getting my legs back. Minor setbacks. edit: my app says I do a mile in 8:31, but I don't try 1.5 miles. I have a 3.4 mile course I do every day ( unless it rains ) and usually alternate running/walking quarter miles, half miles or a mix of the two. Depending on if I'm sore or it's really humid. If it's not too humid I'll do the course multiple times or add on other routes afterwards. |
