Amazon has Launch OBD2 scanners on their Deal of the Day.
Here's a $15 one. I have a $15 one from Newegg, it does work, I was able to read codes and fix O2 sensor on my old Civic, also indicated a bunch of codes that eventually lead to a wire harness issue that was diagnosed with help of this forum.

I've looked at the OBD II scanners with Bluetooth which can interface in real-time with an iPhone, like the PLX Kiwi:

If you need one that works with Audi & VW, the top-rated Foseal WiFI OBD2 scanner is on sale @ Amazon for $18.39. Works with iOS, Android, & Windows. iOS app (OBD Car Doctor) is free on the App Store.
It's WiFi, not BT. Your device connects to it thru the app like it would with a printer.
Also supports most any other make vehicle with an OBD2 port

They have their own proprietary system, called VAG Com. Volkswagen Audi Group Com. They have tried VERY hard to keep their protocol as secret as possible. It has been very hard for outsiders to get the info to build code readers.

I thought that the U.S. government required OBD II ports, under a standard. VAG making it hard to use undermines at least the spirit of that.

What appear to be the same scanner as the Foseal is sold by a bunch of sellers on Amazon for as little as $10. Stickers on them are nearly identical, just with a different brand name.

. . . and that was just on the first two pages. The insides may differ some. The post for one of them said something about "upgraded chip".
Does make me wonder, when the name brands like BlueDriver and PLX Devices are $80-$100, although these probably include software. But apparently the iOS app OBD Car Doctor is free, and paid apps like OBD Fusion and DashCommand are $10.
One review on the Foseal unit noted that a dedicated OBD II reader goes out of date, whereas the iOS apps can be updated. So there is an advantage to separating the hardware and software.

As Racer X noted, it's a proprietary system. BMW & Mercedes are very similar in this approach.
(All three of them also make it very difficult for non-dealers to provide replacement or duplicate electronic fobs/keys. In the Mid-Atlantic area, I have yet to find a 'locksmith' who can provide a 100% compatible VW unit. The engine disabler transponder is cited as the reason.)
It seems most of the Foseal clone OBD units listed can't handle all VW Group vehicles. The ZadaUS is a reported exception.
