Looking for deal on basic PC laptop, for running Windows version of QuickBooks Pro. Recommendations? - john-o - 11-26-2017

Hopefully I won’t get beat up too bad over this. :peace: Subject pretty much says it all. I’m just really tired of the hassle of running virtualization software to use the Windows version of QB (which my accountant requires me to use). I find that I don’t keep my books updated very often, mostly because I don’t want to have to deal with the performance hit of running it virtually on my Mac.

Any Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals to recommend? I’d like to spend under $500, but don’t want it to be a dog either. I’m currently considering these two deals between $600-650 at B&H and BestBuy online:

TiA for any suggestions you may have!

Dell refurbished using coupon codes (heres the current list). I generally can get a Latitude laptop for $200-$250.

Thanks! How do you decide which one to get? Price alone?

One last question, after narrowing it down to a Latitude E7440 and a Precision M4800. They come with either Windows 7 or 8, and I’m curious if it’s still possible to update to Windows 10 for free (or do I even want to do that)?

The Precision is cheaper, but heavier, and has much better hardware specs. Since I won’t be traveling with it often, if ever, I think I’ll probably go for that one. Interestingly though, it’s got Windows 7 Pro installed, whereas the Latitude has 8 Pro. I like 7 a lot, but don’t know how much longer it’ll be supported, if it still is?

Thanks again @Ombligo!

Why not use the Mac version? I did the PC version on a VM for years. My accountant can't tell I switched to Mac.

If you want Win10, just get a newer Dell. They used to have great sales the last 10 days of December. Find a couple that have been on sale in the product lines you like and sign up for alerts on Dealnews. If it's just for QuickBooks, I would look for a faster dual core than a slower quad core.

Inspiron 15 3000 i3-6006U, 8GB, 1TB
This one was $400, but it's listed as a "member purchase program" and I don't know fi they will give the $71 discount if you can't figure out how to qualify.

There's only a couple minor features it doesn't have. Do you use those? It works better than the PC version. You're still giving them the same money either way. Might as well vote that you want the Mac version.

Best Buy was selling a Dell with a Core i5, 8 GB ram and a 1 TB drive for $360 on Black Friday. I would keep an eye out for a similar deal tomorrow.

There was a way to upgrade to Windows 10 for free, but it will end on Dec 31. Goto: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/windows10upgrade?ranMID=24542&ranEAID=je6NUbpObpQ&ranSiteID=je6NUbpObpQ-PbXR0hrpwNMmh_1JFSz5Yg&tduid=(ab72caf1ffae4a76799ce31dccb1efd5)(256380)(2459594)(je6NUbpObpQ-PbXR0hrpwNMmh_1JFSz5Yg)()

I used it on two laptops, it gives the full version and works just fine.
