VPN's do you use them? What are good VPN's? . - Kraniac - 02-16-2018

Are they easy to set up?

VPN's, tell us about it

I use Private Internet Access. PIA. Sometimes on sale, seen on Slickdeals sometimes.

Works fine.

NordVPN

Look for a deal. Highly rated. Easy to set up and use. Essential if you travel away from your home network - and even at home it adds another level of bullet-proofing.

Works well with MacOS, IOS, apps for both that are easy to set up and configure. You can choose a local server or one that's farther away from home.

The only downside to any of these is that you lose some internet speed to latency as your signal bounces around. But for most except those who are pushing lots of bits, it's a negligible drop.

I have PIA now and I don't like that I can't watch my Netflix with it. If I were to switch (still have over a year) I would move to NordVPN. Google for their 3 year deal for $99.

Wife wants to watch some videos only on a Canadian web site... VPN for that?

Maybe I need a new post.

I use PIA. Here is the list of cities you can connect from. If you connect to Banks, Credit Card Companies, etc., the problem is they aren't sure it is you or a hacker. So they make you confirm your ID, either by email or text message. Switch cities and you have to verify again.

If you use DD-WRT on your router you can put the info into DD-WRT and everything on your network will go thru the VPN. May work on other router configs, I just haven't tried it.

I've got Tunnel Bear. Some others have found it slow, but I only use it occasionally and only have the free limited monthly account.

Set up is about as easy as I can imagine:
Register online at tunnelbear.com
Then load an extension or app for access. Options:
- browser extension, but only for Chrome
- Mac app which puts an icon in the menu bar
- iPhone app

In all three cases you install, enter your login info once, then it's an "on/off" button. Click on, wait a second or two for the VPN to be established, and you are on. Tunnel Bear offers "auto" for the location (which seems to default to the U.S.), or you can pick one of about 17 countries.

The Mac and iPhone apps set up everything you do online (email, web browsing, etc.) to run through the VPN. I have found that the Chrome extension requires me to log back in again if I haven't used it in some time.

For what I've used it for (mainly access to U.S. accounts when abroad) Tunnel Bear has been great. Have not tried, for example, watching our U.S. Netflix account from abroad.

I assume the other VPN providers mentioned offer something similar.

My iPhone also has a VPN button in the top section of Settings. Going into Settings>General>VPN, it uses the Tunnel Bear settings, but there is also an option for manual setup of a VPN connection. I can also activate the VPN from the Tunnel Bear app.

You can manually set up VPN settings on a Mac in System Preferences>Network by clicking the "+" button at the bottom of the list of network connections, then selecting "VPN" as the interface from the popup. There is a "how to" for Mac VPN setup here:

Good luck.

Great info in this thread.

I use a VPN from my work, but if I didn't have that, I'd get one for me when I travel abroad for any financial transactions.

I use Witopia.

A VPN is useful when you are downloading the new "Black Panther" movie. Not that I would ever do anything like THAT. Heh, heh, heh...
