Talk me out of a mild mid-life crisis car... Honda Civic Si ? - cbelt3 - 02-19-2018

I love driving my beat up 2002 Honda Civic. I love shifting (5 speed) and zooming around. But it's just not that ... zoomy. And it's rusty. And has 200K miles on it. And we're getting a surprise income check next month. I'm thinking about getting a (used) Civic Si to feed my inner need for speed. I've always liked zoomy little cars... agile, enough HP to get in and out of trouble, and a nice brisk stick shift. Yeah, driving traffic is a pain in the left leg, but Cleveland doesn't have traffic like larger cities, so it's not a big deal.

There are a few 6 to 9 year old SI's in the area for less than $10K New ones are like $25K... I don't like "Tuner" nonsense... I won't put a bunch of Fast and Furious nonsense on it.

Should I ? Is there a better marque that I should look at ?

I am curious which car can go from 0 to say 40 MPH faster: a Volt or a Civic Si?

A Civic Si. Cuz he won't zoom the Volt like he will the Civic.

There are a lot of cars that I'd look at first, before a Civic Si, if I were looking for "zoomy".

What's your budget? Are you capable/willing to do maintenance yourself? Do you have any constraints around number of seats? Would convertible work?

I personally think Mazda makes better driver cars - I'd look at Mazda 3 and/or Miata for Japanese, a used 3 series BMW - e46 or e90 - or VW GTI for German, etc.

If you like Hondas, then go that way. They are reliable.

Volt electric motor is all torque, of course. They look kind of similar.

2016 and newer Civics are much better than previous-generation models.

If a Civic Si is a "mid-life crisis car" for you, and you dig it, then go for it.

What Cary said. A nine year old Civic Si is not exactly a high performance car. My office mate just picked up a low mileage 2003 BMW M3 convertible for $14k (a non-convertible or non-M3 3-Series such as my 2006 330 CI would definitely go for considerably less). Those would blow the doors off a Civic Si in any performance parameter and be way more luxurious to boot. I'd say that here are many better choices than a Civic if you want zoomy.

All depends upon what you want to take on. I'm familiar with the VW golf scene. I went with a golf because it was _much_ more zoomy than anything else we might have considered.

Used Honda S2000.
