No G4 notebook deals with MacBook announcement ? - sgr11 - 01-12-2006 Was I wrong to expect discounts on the G4 notebook computers along with the MacBook announcement? Maybe when they ship ? Steve Re: No G4 notebook deals with MacBook announcement ? - spacescape - 01-12-2006 I don't think the announce that they are discontinuing the G4 PowerBooks yet... So, I would say they will carry both for 6-12 more months for the people whom NEED os9 (classic) compatibility... Me myself... I'm keeping my Dual 1.8 G5 for another 1-2 years seeing it will involve me getting upgrades to my audio apps (cubase, reason, etc.) because they really need to be run native. Also, I'll need to buy a PCI Express Audio card. USB or Firewire audio card might be a safer way to go this time. Bill Re: No G4 notebook deals with MacBook announcement ? - sgr11 - 01-12-2006 So you think it would take a discontinuation to get discounts? My 2001 G3 iBook probably wont last longer than a couple of weeks, and I was hoping for a nice deal on a G4 notebook after whatever MWSF was going to announce. Re: No G4 notebook deals with MacBook announcement ? - spacescape - 01-12-2006 Did you look at refurbished? That might be your best deal... Re: No G4 notebook deals with MacBook announcement ? - Jimmypoo - 01-12-2006 Shipping in Feb could mean... they'll be getting them in from Taiwan in Feb! you'll be getting them in March! Still.... those SPEC scores looked great. I wish we had those scores a while back. Remember when they used to be good compared to Pentijunks? Re: No G4 notebook deals with MacBook announcement ? - rexrzer - 01-12-2006 As time goes on here, you'll see discounts on G4 PowerBooks and iBooks. Amazon still has its $900 iBook G4 deal going, and there are plenty of other great deals on refurbished units if you want to go that way (I never do, but some swear by buying refurb). Don't forget that Apple's introducing the new MacBook Pros at fantastic price points, compared to both normal PBooks, and competition from Gateway, Dell, etc. I think this is a very smart thing to do, but not putting a "premium" on the new Intel system notebooks. There will be "teething issues" with the MacBook Pros, just you wait and see. It's not going to be a perfectly smooth road of transition. I predict both software and hardware issues will crop up on these new products, no matter how well Apple engineers them. And people will try to install Windows on them, creating another whole culture of issues, IMO. I'd just wait a few weeks and see what's happening then with the market before I bought anything. ______________ Re: No G4 notebook deals with MacBook announcement ? - Jimmypoo - 01-12-2006 I wonder how many people will buy them for the "reliability" and load WinDuds on them? Then... they will whine to Apple. Apple will say "sorry... call M$ for that problem. We shipped it with an OS." So then people will bitch about the units instead of the XP or CrapHorn or the Visna Virus junk coming out of Redmond. Pricing on the new MacBooks is practically identical to the current PowerBooks. How do you see it as being otherwise? Re: No G4 notebook deals with MacBook announcement ? - bradsdad - 01-12-2006 Did someone earlier imply that the new books cannot run classic? Re: No G4 notebook deals with MacBook announcement ? - sgr11 - 01-12-2006 Never bought refurb, but will look into the pricing. The Amazon iBook is still tempting. Had I known my old iBook was really going out, I'd have jumped on it last month when it was ~ $786 after rebate and pi/2 discount - but now maybe a 12" combo-drive powerbook may not be too much more?? |
