I bought this album on eMusic just because I couldn't imagine how this could possibly work. I was blown away by how well it works. It is a really cool interpretation of Greenday's music in the bluegrass style.

The local community radio station here plays a bluegrass show on Sundays which includes a lot of covers of rock tunes which are just sad and embarrassing. I went over to emusic.com and had a listen. I'm not a fan of Greenday, so maybe because these songs are unfamiliar to me, they sounded a little less icky than the bluegrass version of Black Dog. Still icky though.

I'm not saying that it is good Bluegrass. How the heck would I know. I'm sure a fan of bluegrass would cringe at this stuff, but it has made me, not a lover of bluegrass, appreciate the style a bit more. This is pleasant to listen to for me.

I'm a fan of both bluegrass and Green Day so I like this, and just may have to buy. I found it on iTunes too. Based on the iTS ratings and reviews, some Green Day fans seem pretty annoyed at this.

I have the bluegrass tribute to the Moody Blues. I think it's a lot of fun. What I did not realize until about a week ago, when I stumbled over it accidentally, is that recording bluegrass versions of rock and pop songs has almost become a genre in its own right:

I'm a 'newgrass' fan from way back, and have owned a few of these "Pickin' on…" discs over the years. My favorite is "Pickin' on Santana"; some very nice renditions. And for the most part, these productions are done using a group of some of the best pickers around. I agree, though, that some of the projects are pretty lame.
There's a long tradition of bluegrass versions of popular music & jazz. One of my all time favorites is Jerry Douglas' version of Weather Report's Birdland, from this disc:

I like cross-genre and interpretation groups. I pick those up whenever possible; got a pretty nice one that's a baroque interpretation of Rush tunes.
