I want to build a teepee - pinion - 10-30-2006 I know there are a lot of different directions on the internet on how to do this but I am curious whether or not any of you have any experience in this. The point is we want to put it in my friends back yard over his fire pit that has a radius of about 2 to 2.5 feet making the diameter about 5 feet (probably closer to 4). We'd like to be able to get 10 chairs in there with us as well as have the fire going. Does anyone out there have any suggestions? Re: I want to build a teepee - samintx - 10-30-2006 First I think you have to kill deer or Buffalo don't you? Seriously, sounds like fun. Re: I want to build a teepee - Paul F. - 10-30-2006 Just remember the angle of the walls/roof will cut down on your useable space inside, necessitating a larger diameter. That, and don't make the walls out of something flamable if you're gonna have a fire-pit in there. Or at least, get some fire-retardant spray at a home center to slow down the teepee going up in flames while you conduct an orderly evacuation through the federally mandated well lit emergency exits... Re: I want to build a teepee - mattkime - 10-30-2006 first you need an injun Re: I want to build a teepee - M A V I C - 10-30-2006 This isn't going to be easy. Trying to find leather in sections that big is going to be tough. Most places now that setup teepees setup fake ones. One pretty much has to be on a reservation to even find a real one. [quote mattkime]first you need an injun I've got Cherokee in me so that parts taken care of too. MAVIC- I've heard of people using tent canvas too. Maybe some sort of fire retardent canvas would be easier and more cost effective than using leather. I imagine if we sued leather we'd have to get it in squares and sew it up. Re: I want to build a teepee - Paul F. - 10-30-2006 I would be inclined to use the hides raw (rawhide) rather than going through the trouble to TAN the hides... if you're gonna go the authentic route. The rawhide will dry very hard and make a better "roof"... Not sure what to treat it with for rot resistance though. I think the basic construction is pretty darn simple... 3-5 long poles, bind at the top.. Wrap with hides... I'd stitch the seams with leather lacing... Or try glue :-) Interesting project, to be sure... Re: I want to build a teepee - NewtonMP2100 - 10-30-2006 I thought you meant a house made of TP (toilet paper). . . Re: I want to build a teepee - M A V I C - 10-30-2006 He's going to need more like a dozen poles, Paul. For such a large diameter, a triangle is going to lose a lot of space, same with a pentagon. The tricky part will be how the top is assembled to allow the smoke to flow out. Binding right there could be damaged due to high heat.
