questions - helping a friend sell art (paintings) on Ebay - MitchJi - 10-31-2006
Hi,
I offered to help a friend (she really needs the money) sell some paintings on Ebay. She has had some success selling locally in Montana but the market is pretty limited.
She has about 10 or 15 to sell. I noticed most paintings on Ebay don't get bids (although most are pretty bad IMO). I am thinking of putting them up for sale one at a time with a link to a simple web page with the rest of the paintings. If anyone wants to purchase a painting from the Web Site I would then list it on on Ebay so they get their commission.
Does this violate Ebay's policies?
If so will they ever know (I frequently see links to related items with other sellers)?
Any other ideas or suggestions?

Mitch: ebay links are usually to the sellers other listings. Google "art online" and the like and find "Page Source" up in the browser menus and check the descriptions under 'meta' tags, which you probably know are directives toward your website. Can your friend find a local restaurant friendly toward artists? Probably have more luck here.

why not include, as one of the auction pix, a pic that includes ALL of the paintings?
be sure to indicate the one that's up for bid, and also point out that the others are coming up for bid in the near future.

One of my favorite sellers on ebay is dearcrissy. I haven't bought anything yet, just like some of her work. Your friend should take note of how she structures her store and auctions along with the keywords she uses. For instance, her tagline for the store is "Paintings, ACEO (Art Cards Editions and Originals), jewelry, and more by outsider artist Crissy McMain." Note the use of "ACEO". I know it will be different for your friend, but you could guys could start looking for keywords specific to her genre in some successful completed auctions. dearcrissy makes smaller postcard size works and gets between $60 - $120 for each of them.
