How much is this worth? 2008 iMac - DavidS - 04-13-2018 I have a 24" iMac, 2008 edition. Core 2 Duo, 2.8Ghz, 2GB RAM, 320GB HDD. Mac2Sell says that it's worth $610, but I cannot fathom asking/getting nearly that much for a 10 year old computer. A neighbor is interested in buying it for her 19yo son to do some music and video production. I'm not sure if it is even up to the task after upgrading the RAM to 6GB (about $70 extra), but he wants to check it out. Any thoughts/opinions on this? Re: How much is this worth? 2008 iMac - Robert M - 04-13-2018 David, It's worth squat in its existing configuration and I wouldn't put any money into it. Give it to your neighbor as a gift. Robert Re: How much is this worth? 2008 iMac - PeterW - 04-13-2018 For what the neighbor wants to do, the mini on the For Sale Forum would be a much better fit plus the price is fair. Re: How much is this worth? 2008 iMac - p8712 - 04-13-2018 $100. Toss in a $50 ssd and it'll run well enough, but spend no more than that. Re: How much is this worth? 2008 iMac - ka jowct - 04-13-2018 I disposed of one of those at an ecycling event a while back. The 6GB RAM limit is a problem. The one I got rid of had a dead hard drive and a dead optical drive. If yours hasn’t got problems with either of these drives, it probably soon will. I would not expect anyone to pay anything to acquire that machine, For music and video, it would be painful. Re: How much is this worth? 2008 iMac - jdc - 04-13-2018 Im In the same camp -- kinda useless without internal SSD. More ram would be a huge waste of $. THe internal SSD is huge difference. Kid has a similar 2007 24" with 3 GB ram and 256 GB SSD it and it runs snappy -- google docs, spotify, school stuff is no problem. She actually put together a 4 minute video in iMovie over the weekend, seemed to work fine. If you dont need the $, then $50, and tell him it will need at least a $120 500 GB SSD and a some tech know how to install. Should run OK for limited use, and not a long term thing. IMHO, The new $329 iPad would be a better choice... Re: How much is this worth? 2008 iMac - Zoidberg - 04-13-2018 Mac2Sell is way off base. I've got a Late 2013 27" (with a lot more RAM and HDD space) I'm going to sell for not much more than that. Re: How much is this worth? 2008 iMac - modelamac - 04-13-2018 DavidS, I have that very unit, but in a 2007 model. Mine has 6GB RAM. El Capitan's Safari was just recently upgraded, and the OS has had recent Security updates. Even with the additional Ram and SSD, it still takes a while to render and burn movies using IDVD, but everything else works quite well. I think your iMac would be over-worked on his intended use of the iMac. It might handle music, but he would be disappointed with the video performance. . Still on 10.6.8, too. Runs great. Re: How much is this worth? 2008 iMac - D. Lawson - 04-13-2018 decay wrote: Same here, although mine is still at 6 GB. The only video work I've done was a few 720p home video and photo slideshows, which iMovie handled just fine (granted, we're only talking single layers of audio and video for the majority of the project). I'll upgrade it to a SSD if I'm ever in the mood to take one apart again, which could be never. |
