I ran into a real life consquence of the steel tariffs - GGD - 08-03-2018 I had a 4 shelf steel shelving unit that I disassembled and took to a local recycling center to see if they would recycle it. They told me that they don't take steel other than cans anymore. Ever since the tariffs went into effect it was becoming more difficult to get anyone to take away their steel, too much paperwork related to proving the origin of the steel is what I understood the problem to be. So it went to a landfill instead. Making America Great Again. I wonder if auto salvage yards are impacted by this. Re: I ran into a real life consquence of the steel tariffs - samintx - 08-03-2018 Interesting. I would think cars would be affected. Re: I ran into a real life consquence of the steel tariffs - Speedy - 08-03-2018 It only affects newly imported steel. Re: I ran into a real life consquence of the steel tariffs - cbelt3 - 08-03-2018 I think your scrap place got bad advice from someone. BUT... products that are made of steel are going up in price. My company's primary product is about 80% steel. AND the ONLY steel that fits our requirements comes from Canada. We tried. Nobody in the US will make that product in the large volumes we need. Both mills in the US that made the product closed in the 90's... despite what Trumplicans believe, you don't just 'turn the machines back on. Old steel mills are nothing but holes in the ground. Guess what ? We had to raise our prices 25%. Our customers are NOT happy. Re: I ran into a real life consquence of the steel tariffs - sekker - 08-03-2018 Just the beginning. Wait until Apple RAISES prices due to tariffs. Re: I ran into a real life consquence of the steel tariffs - Carm - 08-03-2018 Coke already announced they would be raising the price of their drink because of tariffs. https://www.google.com/search?q=coke+raising+prices+tariffs&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari I think the problem you ran into was that China is getting strict on what trash or mix of trash it takes in. https://mobile.reuters.com/article/amp/idUSL3N1RW1UK Re: I ran into a real life consquence of the steel tariffs - max - 08-03-2018 GGD wrote: Total BS, there is no such requirement for scrap..... Total assumption on your part, many states have such requirements on scrap due to theft. Item that makes the news most often is copper scrap due to thieves stripping houses of wiring and plumbing. But The same thing happens with other metals. Documentable items like cars or scrap from a local manufacturer is one thing, random drop offs of other items is another. P.S. That is why my town has a large bin for metal items at the transfer yard. Recyclers and scrap yards will take it and sort through because they have a documentable source - the town. Re: I ran into a real life consquence of the steel tariffs - Acer - 08-03-2018 You'd have to be working at the scale of tons to make money stealing steel for scrap.
