NYT Op Ed reminded me of a story from an earlier presidency - sekker - 09-06-2018
At the time, I had family and friends very high in the military network, and was even given a full backdoor tour of the White House and Oval Office that's not possible today.
I was assured on two separate occasions by independent credible sources that the White House military and support teams took national security very seriously.
The story was that if Air Force One were to crash, that 'Air Force Two' (there is no such thing, but the plane with the VP in it) would ALSO 'happen' to crash.
Why? The VP was considered a National Security Risk were he to become President.
Want to take a stab at the President/VP that was under discussion?

I would guess Nixon/Agnew but I'm thinking that you would have been too young then, but maybe this wasn't a discussion of the actual president at that time, but of prior administrations.

They didn't have to kill Agnew, that bad land deal was in their back pocket just waiting to be whipped out once they saw Nixon was over. Agnew was doomed from the day the Watergate burglary happened.

This was a current president/vp at the time.

It seems extremely unlikely that the President and Vice President are airborne at the same time hardly ever.
