Lethal Weapon Star Damon Wayans Says He's Leaving Fox Series — Watch

.....Damon Wayans says he’s literally getting too old for this s–t. In an interview with Electronic Urban Report, the 58-year-old actor says he’s quitting his Fox series, Lethal Weapon. Wayans adds that he’ll leave in December, after he’s shot 13 episodes of the current season, which will give the show time to find a replacement.

The announcement comes after a tumultuous few months at the dramedy. Just before the Season 2 finale in May, former star Clayne Crawford — who played Riggs to Wayans’ Murtaugh in the series adaptation of the popular action films — was fired after being disciplined several times over complaints of emotional abuse and creating a hostile environment on set. Crawford later countered that stories of his outbursts were greatly exaggerated, adding that his difficult working relationship with Wayans was the greater cause behind his ouster.

Around that time, an actor who worked with Crawford characterized the Lethal Weapon situation as, “Damon is used to sitcom work and Clayne is used to cable drama. Damon likes sitcom hours, while Clayne wanted the show to be Emmy material. It was oil and water.”

In May, Seann William Scott was hired to play Wesley Cole, Murtaugh’s new partner, and the series was renewed for Season 3. The new episodes began airing in September.

In the interview, Wayans cites his age and the fact that he is diabetic as reasons he no longer wants to work the hours that a broadcast series requires.

“You have to look yourself in the eye and ask, who are you? It can’t be all about work. I’m from a big family, a loving family. All the family gatherings, I haven’t seen them. I’m too tired or I can’t because it conflicts with work,” he said. “I have seven grandkids. I’ve been missing recitals and graduations. To me it’s just not worth it. There is a better way to live life.”

Both Fox and Warner Bros., which produces the series, declined to comment for this story.

Maybe Terry Crews can step in as the new Murtaugh, like the two Dicks that played Darren, or Barbara/Donna playing Miss Ellie, or Pamela Sue/Emma playing Fallon, or.......

Just finished the second episode.

As much as I liked the Riggs character, Ive totally forgotten about him (well not really, but you know), I like the new Cole just as much.

I say they just replace him like Buzz said. But not with Crews. Maybe taye Diggs. Think hes close to 50. And played LAPD decetive before. maybe not nerdy enough. Or his brother Marlon?

I agree, The new guy is great. Maybe we will get a second great character. Fingers crossed.

I thought about Diggs, but Crews is 50 and has proven his comedic chops. I really like Diggs in his cop roles, but feared he might lack the necessary funny edge the Murtaugh character needs. I would hope to be wrong, but would also hate to see the show fail from miscasting. Similar reasoning, in reverse for bro Marlon, I think of him as too funny, and not coppy enough, but would again hope to be wrong. Remember, the new/next guy has to step into a ready-made family as well as the cop stuff. No clue about how serious the network and producers are about keeping the show alive, but I hope they do. On a side TV note, I'm liking the new Mayans M.C. better than the S.O.A. it's apparently spun off from.

They've made the New Guy look dumber than they make Riggs look phsyco.

Kind of the Two Stooges. Really poor writing.

Now I'm sorry they killed Riggs off and just didm' leave him on life support, hoping...

I'm really, really tired of Wayan's voice, so I won't miss him. The supporting cast is good, but while the series is full of tropes, the acting division chief is the worst. I like Brooks Avery. (Was somebody a Hawk/Sisco fan?) With even a little better writing, and better recasting, it could survive, unlike Castle, when Katic was sent packing.

I don't see that happening.

I can't comment on Barbara/Donna as Miss Ellie as I never watched whatever show that was on. I'm guessing it was Dallas?
However, Dick York was far superior to Dick Sargent as Darren though Dick Sargent wasn't bad if taken entirely on his own merits, and Pamela Sue Martin was VASTLY superior (and looked about 30 years younger than) Emma Sams as Fallon.

Was just trying to make the point that it was possible for series's to survive after a bit of character recasting; didn't mean any commentary one way or another on either actor's portrayal of characters named in the example. I like Lethal Weapon, so hope that it can be positively evolved, and saved.
