My MacBook Pro seems to have lost sync with backups: Time Capsule, Amazon Photos, Shoebox - Winston - 01-25-2019

My MacBook Pro (2010, Mac OS 10.11.6) lost sync with the backup via our Time Capsule, which is actually to an external drive connected to the Time Capsule. Now it's trying to set up a new backup.

Then I noticed that my Mac had slowed down. Activity Monitor showed that Amazon Photos is using most of the CPU.

Turns out that Amazon Photos online only has about 12,000 of some 111,000 photos it wants to back up.

And Shoebox is at something like 16,000 of 65,000 (I have both iPhoto and Photos libraries, and guess that this is just one of them).

What could have happened that hiccuped all three backups?
Is there any way to get Time Machine to return to the previous backup?
I already have two backups, because Time Machine didn't use the clone I'd made of the backup that was on the Time Capsule itself, when I moved over to the external drive.

Mac is otherwise behaving normally.

Thanks.

Except that some things are running really slowly. Took forever to get a print dialog up, then a long time to get the printers list up.

Perhaps the laptop drive is corrupted.

First I'd get a good clone or backup on a known good drive.

Possibly a corrupt image or video in your one of your libraries. Might be more than one. Is there a pattern to where the Shoebox/Amazon Photos backup are stopping? Have you repaired the databases recently?

Really slow brings two things to mind:
- re-indexing after a new OS install
- a failing internal drive

There was a different drive health app mentioned recently that has a free trail period.

Drive health is reported as fine by a couple of different programs (Drive Genius and DriveDx).

I realized after posting that a week or two ago I added a bunch of old photos from another drive to my MBP internal drive.

Don't understand why Amazon Drive has just found them. But at least there is a reason for Amazon Drive to be doing backups. But it's not being graceful. It's using almost all of the CPU, including numbers above 100%.

Shoebox seems to be less intrusive. It's using about 1.3% of CPU.

Something called ReportCrash is also using a lot of CPU. Activity Monitor reports 30-35% of CPU usage.

I now think the loss of sync with the Time Machine backup is a separate issue from the slowdown caused by the photos backup. Time Machine is stuck at "Preparing Backup".
