UK: Parliament votes in favor of fantasy - pdq - 01-30-2019

Yes, we want Brexit - that Brexit we voted for, that would be easy, and definitely not a no-deal Brexit. Also, please solve that thorny Ireland border deal, and have the EU pay for it all. M'kay?

Politicians voted against leaving the EU ”without a withdrawal agreement and a framework for the future relationship.”

It was championed as a sign of cross-party cooperation—but rejected by the EU in a matter of minutes. Donald Tusk, president of the European Council, said the deal was “not open for re-negotiation..”

Oops. While they were at it, Parliament turned down an amendment that would have sought a delay in Brexit. May and (mostly) the conservatives are barreling toward a no-deal disaster, and the pound is starting to reflect that.

A right royal mess.

Anyone else want to leave the EU? Anyone? No? Well, there you go. Example made.

One of the best Brexit commentators who opines regularly on the madness, John Crace:
John Crace wrote:
Even in the by-now familiar Alice in Wonderland world of Schrödinger’s Brexit, where everything can simultaneously be and not be, this was a bit of a stretch for many on the opposition benches. Chris Leslie wondered quite how she squared away her claim to be able to secure a deal by ditching the Northern Ireland backstop with her insistence that rejecting the backstop would inevitably end in a no-deal....

...Brexit continues to make fools of all those with whom it comes in contact. Especially those that were already fools. Give it time and most MPs will be only able to speak in non-verbal grunts. A rare win-win. They’d probably make more sense that way. By the close there was almost no one in the house. Had anyone from the EU been bothering to listen in to such a dismal debate, they’d probably conclude they were far better off without us anyway. This is the new UK. Bringing down the average IQ of the whole of Europe. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/jan/29/after-two-years-of-no-progress-whatsoever-bring-on-plan-c-minus

What's the acronym? PIIGS? (Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece, Spain). ALL BROKE (or nearly so), why would THEY leave a "union" that's carrying their debt? I'm more surprised that the countries that are more fiscally prudent would agree to carry the deadbeats. Once GB "escapes" let's see how long it takes for other "givers" to follow GB's example (especially since fewer member countries will have to pay more to take up the slack).

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he can eat everyday.

Give a man (or country) a dollar and they'll come back for more (again and again and again....).

WWII debt went LARGELY unpaid. If I recall correctly, ONLY Finland repaid their war debt. Everybody else decided it was best to ignore their debt, hate the United States, and bite the hand that fed them. When will we learn that "bought" friendships last only as long as the money flows? If foreigners are going to hate us, we should STOP paying them TO hate us.

Brexiteers, anti-vaxxers, climate deniers, MAGA walls...the world is taking crazy pills.

Wow, thats a dark take on the EU. The EU has its problems but it almost entirely related to having a unified monetary policy due to the the shared currency. The ripple effects spread considerably.

But the free movement of goods and people? You have to go pretty far right to hear anyone complaining about that.

Yes, EU membership costs something but its silly to not consider the significant benefits of membership.

I really have no idea what you're trying to say here. As near as i can tell this is a diatribe based n a misunderstanding of money as it relates to governments.

testcase seems to think EU members are “states” being subsidized by a “federal” entity, the U.S.?

Yeah, the breadcrumbs on this one are pretty stale.

The paws of the Russian Bear are all over the Brexit kerfluffle, just like they are all over our President. The Internet has delivered a hitherto unheard of tool into the hands of the reborn Soviet Union, and enabled it to destabilize its list of enemies:
The US
NATO
The EU

They tried for China, but China locked their internet down, and is using it to control their own population.

Stiff upper lip, old chap.

It would be undignified to slow the train now - the people voted in favor of locomotion, and we must remember that no matter where these tracks lead!

It's all fun and games until the Troubles are reignited by a hard border. This is not a joke.
