Hmm... will it, I wonder aloud, fit in a 27" iMac ( with optical drive model) that a friend has with a bad HD?

Nice find. 2 of them would make a nice little 2 GB RAID 0 with some sweet 800 MB/s speeds... if you needed that.
Of course, a portable 2 TB HDD is only about $60...

Sweet - I had no idea. Now if only I can stumble across an inexpensive used iMac!
Also... grumbling because a little over 6 months ago I bought a $180 TB SSD... and a previously even more expensive SSD, and I've used neither. (The first one I had thought my current 500GB SSD was giving out, but it was just a misconfiguration.)

You should be able to find a 27" 2010 iMac, even with a 2.93 i7, for $500?
Mine, with a SSD and 32 GB of ram didnt feel much slower than my current 2014 iMac.
2010 iMacs do have a couple of drawbacks, but it depends on your workflow. Internal SATA III, so max SSD speed is only 300 MB/s, USB 2, and no retina screen.
for me, out of all those, only the retina screen was the big difference. USB 3 helped my change my workflow, but I could have adjusted with my old iMac.

It'll fit, plus there are nifty carriers that make for a sweet, clean install, and some that'll even let you park two drives in there... or you can use velcro or duct tape and achieve the same functionality.

I didnt use anything to hold my SSD in. Its not like the iMac was mving anywhere, and SSDs are feather weight.
