Do you approve of these vendor tactics? - Buzz - 03-04-2019

Not gonna name names, but there are some big time, well known vendors that keep changing their MSRP's to go hand-in-hand with their percentages-off sales. I'm talking about their own brand name products, mainly clothing BTW. I can deal w/ changing total purchase threshold tiers for free shipping, that's pretty much in your face. When they vary the % off, I can deal w/ that; 30% off is better than 25% off.... as long as that $75 item remains $75. When that $75 'retail' item retails for $70 the next week, then $85 the next week, then back to $75 the next, then up to $80 the next, and % off sales also keep changing along with the retail price changes; well, that just chaps my butt cheeks.

I can deal w/ consistent slight differences between online and B&M pricing, and/or coupons/codes that can only used for one venue or the other, but c'mon, at least keep the 'retail' pricing consistent. I'm sure y'all get the emails that advertise "40% sale" in the headline, and you think you know what you're getting into. At least w/ mainstream products that are sold in lots of places, like say Nike sneakers, you can easily find out the real MSRP is, to compare sales to.

I'm guessing such vendors are playing these pricing games w/ their own home brewed products in order to garner more clicks, because you have to click thru to find out not only free shipping parameters, is it $29?, $49?, $79?, $99? But also to try to figure out what the product cost is that week.

Whatcha think about meandering "retail" prices?

Edit: My fave pants, per my reply down below, went from $80 retail yesterday when I posted this, to $85 retail today, but 40% off remains the same, resulting in net price going up $3, from $48 to $51.

Sounds like a reason to start a price tracking site dedicated to exposing their shenanigans.

I don't pay attention to MSRP anymore.

The percent allegedly discounted is a nonsensical figure no matter where it's found, but especially online where its common to find items priced well below the alleged wholesale price, so what's the point of MSRP?

I know how much most of the items I'm interested in are priced and can spot a deal much of the time.

When I'm looking at an online sale item that I haven't priced recently, I'll check its price-history or compare it on other sites.

When I'm standing in front of the item in a store, I check online prices and ads from my phone. Many stores will match online prices, so a few seconds of research can save some money and allow me to walk out with an item that I'd otherwise have to wait for in the mail.

Retail prices are illusory.

Everything in the store is up to 50% OFF
[spoiler=Translation]
A box of toothpicks is 50% off, everything else is between 0% and 5% OFF

Kohl'ssis absolutely ridiculous about this the few times I've bought any clothes there. However, one can still find a bargain if the prices are researched well enough.

"Call before midnight tonight!"

And you will get the same offer that you would get at 12:01 AM.

"You saved $5322 on a pair of jeans and two shirts!"

Some years ago mrs. cbelt3 and I were shopping at a Macy's. We happened to go past the jewelry counter as mrs. cbelt3 has a magpie's attraction to sparkly stuff. And the young lady was changing the price markers on ALL the products in the case. Why ? They had a "50% off" sale starting the following day. So all products were getting a little price marker that was double the currently marked price.

You'll be able to recover tiny bits of money when you join some of the class action suits that are progressing concerning deceptive pricing: https://www.bna.com/dont-discount-deceptive-n73014463595/
