Old AppleCare - DavidS - 09-09-2019
I just successfully used an unused AppleCare code that I bought at a CompUSA going out of business sale for my wife’s new MacBook Air. They went out of business in 2012. I was surprised that Apple would honor if, since they now call it AppleCare+. I had to call AppleCare for them to be able to apply it, but I got no push back at all.

The old applecare is still an option, but I think you have to call them to buy it.
I once used a 'Macbook' APP retail box on a 2010/11 13" macbook pro. The folks at the apple store had to call the mothership, but they got it to work.

What sort of coverage did you wind up with? The old standard AppleCare coverage (without accidental damage incidents), or the new AppleCare+ coverage?
Using Apple's terminology, a 7 year old product from 2012 would be considered Vintage, and unsupported. Glad that they honored it.

I have a 20 or so year old box for a PowerBook. I wonder if they will let it be used for a MacBook Pro? It is a French Canadian version which couldn’t be used in the USA then but a few years later any AppleCare was treated the same in both the USA and Canada. I’ll have to give it a try next time I buy a new notebook, if I ever do again.

My guess is it is the old standard AppleCare. The opposite of putting AppleCare+ on a machine that was originally sold before AppleCare+ was available can also happen. I bought a refurb 2015 MacBook Pro Retina in 2017 from Apple. I purchased AppleCare for it not realizing it was AppleCare+.
A couple of weeks ago, I brought the laptop in to Apple as it wasn't booting up and the Genius was surprised to see it had AppleCare+. He said he didn't realize it was possible and said I uncovered a loophole by buying a refurb machine and getting AppleCare+ on a machine that was sold before AppleCare+ was offered.

That is brilliant ! I bought one of those boxes 17 years ago at CompUSA for $5 because it was the 'old version' (like... Whiskey tango foxtrot ?). No issues applying it to my wife's Macbook 4 years later.
I bet the 20 year old code will still work.

Yes, it is the older AppleCare and not AC+.
I actually bought 4. This one was the last. I think I paid $50 each for them. Used one for my 2012 MacBook Pro, one for my wife's 2014 MacBook Air, and sold the other on eBay.
