MONTOURSVILLE, Pa. -- A couple in Lycoming County is facing theft charges after their bank accidentally deposited more than $100,000 into their account.

State police say Robert and Tiffany Williams of Montoursville spent most of the money on items ranging from an SUV to a race car.

State police say the couple living at a home on Cypress Street in Montoursville got themselves into hot water after spending money that wasn`t theirs.

Investigators say Robert and Tiffany Williams had $120,000 deposited into their account at BB&T on May 31st through a mistake by a teller.

But instead of contacting the bank about the deposit, the couple allegedly spent most of the money.

All in two and a half weeks, between June 3 through the 19th.

Neighbors were stunned.

The bank deposited $134 dollars into my account with no explanation.

I reported it.

The debited the $134 and froze my account for a month while they investigated. Had to pay my bills on credit. (Lucky I had the credit.)

They punish you either way.

Odd disparity between federal laws. Someone MAILs you something you didn't order, you can legally keep it. Someone gives you money into your bank account, you can't keep it.

They could have day traded the hell out of that money.

The law covering UNSOLICITED items delivered via the UPSP was a LEGISLATED solution to a very real abuse. Innocent people had their credit adversely affected through NO fault of their own.

The bank error, however, is an entirely different matter. The recipients knew (or should have known) that said money was NOT theirs and, they should have taken action to remedy what was obviously a mistake. Had they done so and got “blown off” by the bank, that would have resulted in a very different outcome.

.....saw this on the news.....they should have known that they would eventually catch the error, especially for such a large sum.....spending it right away was stupid.....

Had this happened in Florida, everyone here would have made a ton of jokes. But since it happened elsewhere, there's a serious discussion about federal laws...

"Pennsylvania man" has too many syllables to make an easy meme.
