18 years into the fight. Just the beginning.

eighteen years since the attack.

a long time and a blink all at once.

being a new yorker and in manhattan that day, my wife worked 4 blocks away from the towers, my kids were at two different public schools in manhattan, and i had my annual physical and was laying in a doctor's office in the midst of an ekg when my doctor's son called from his dorm room at vanderbilt to find out if his dad was okay. and that was when i found out.

i spent then next 90min literally running from the westside to the eastside to pickup the kids and get us all back to riverdale, our neighborhood in the bronx.

i didn't hear from my wife till 3pm that afternoon.

and that time of not knowing where she was felt like a long time and a blink all at once.

the american flag hangs from our terrace.

as it has on this day ever since.

rest peacefully.

I made it through nearly half the day before I realized it’s 9-11. Don’t know if that’s a sign of healing and so a good thing. Similar to Pearl Harbor or the Oklahoma City bombing (I don’t think the latter is ever remembered any more....even in the forum).

We had a moment of remembrance at my high school today. As I looked around the room, I realized that not one student in the room was alive when it happened. They have nothing to remember (and you could see it in their disinterested faces).

For most of the adults, it was just yesterday (though even some teachers were just 4-6 years old and don't recall it).

Will never forget the date, or the tragedy.

However, being from CA, and having never been to NY, and unaware of anyone personally effected by it -- I prob dont feel as deep about it as others.

I dont even think we know anyone who has lost someone in the last 18 years of "war".

I was in NYC in late June for a wedding and had the opportunity to visit the memorial, and found myself profoundly moved. Today (as I plan to do every September 11th) I am flying a flag (purchased at the site) that was Flown over the 911 Memorial Site for a day.
