Ordered a couple of things from Costco on same order. Shipped from same warehouse. Same day. Different boxes. Separate tracking numbers. Different service levels. On same truck being delivered at same time.
Why not in same box like Amazon?

I think it's because Costco doesn't actually pack any boxes, I think everything they sell online is pre-packaged in shipping boxes by the manufacturer, and all they do is slap a label on it.

Maybe Costco uses a fulfillment contractor and they use their own packaging schematics?
Why not in same box like Amazon?
I've gotten shipments from AMZ, multiple small items all from the same ADC,
same UPS service yet they used multiple packages and they all arrived at the same time.

One of my Amazon Prime tricks is when ordering a bunch of items on the same order, or even within a few hours of each other; select speedy 1 or 2 day Prime delivery on 1 or 2 of the most important items, then select the slow boat for other items to get whatever spiff is being offered.... most times, everything comes quickly in same package when coming from same fulfillment center, and I still get the spiffs.
With Costco, I ordered two of the more expensive items since the item was on special, and only one of the cheaper item since it wasn't on special, and is also cheaper in the warehouse, and I was running precariously low and doubted I'd make it to the store before running out, so it was worth the extra $1.30 not to have to worry. The expensive stuff showed up in a box with ample room for like at least a dozen of the cheaper things. The cheaper thing showed up in a plastic shipping bag along with some large packing bubbles to soften the blow when the UPS driver threw it on the stairwell.... bubbles worked, but shipping bag split open. Same fulfillment center.
As to GGD's premise of prepackaging; I didn't see any evidence of that, save a generic barcode label that could have represented anything. In my days of designing and building barcode systems, I would have put some sort of English phrasing on the label to designate quantity and relevant info.... something that Amazon routinely does. For Costco to do prepacks of everything, by quantity, would eat up massive quantities of shelf space for all the items they sell, and lengthen the picking trail for their overall orders substantially.
The expensive items came UPS 3 Day Select, and the cheaper item came via UPS Ground. We're less than 2 miles from the western edge of LA County, and the fulfillment center is less than 4 miles from the eastern edge of LA County, but into the adjacent (cheaper cost of operations) San Bernardino County, and both parcels arrived via the same truck, at the same time, in 2 days, though I ordered the items at night on Tues, and they showed up today (Thurs).
I'm just questioning their packaging & shipping schematics, as they seem horribly inefficient in theory, for being as incredibly efficient as they are in reality. I'm the logic guy, and it's messing with my sensibilities.

I think Costco items come from the manufacturer, not any Costco facility

Both items were Kirkland brand, which is Costco's house brand, and both parcels came from same fulfilment center. I have bought things from Costco in the past that did ship from the manufacturer, but that was not the case this time.

Costco's "house brand" products are generally manufactured in the same factories/mills that produce the name-brand equivalents. They are just branded differently for sale. So, most Kirkland-branded items are likely labeled and packaged at the source, and shipped to Costco warehouses already packed.
