https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/plane-diverted-coffee-spill-intl-scli/index.html

"According to the Air Accidents Investigation Branch, the Airbus A330-243, operated by Condor, was traveling from Frankfurt in Germany to Cancún in Mexico on February 6 when it was forced to jettison fuel and divert to Shannon airport.

The 49-year-old pilot, who has over 13,000 hours of flying experience, had been given a cup of coffee without a lid by cabin crew and accidentally knocked it over as the plane was flying over the North Atlantic Ocean, carrying 11 crew and 326 passengers.

Some of the liquid spilled onto the audio control panel, which became very hot and produced smoke and a burning smell. The damage caused "significant communication difficulty for the flight crew," and forced them to wear oxygen masks, the report said.
The equipment became so hot that one of the buttons on the control panel began to melt, which prompted the pilot to divert."

Dude.. buy some of those no spill travel mugs..

Or just tell the coffee runner to put a lid on it.

This is the second incident I've heard of where spilt coffee caused a flight to be aborted.

The first one was quite some time ago.

This only confirms my suspicions of warm beverages

Way back when, like 30+ years ago (boy how time flies), in the Mac SE and upgraded Mac Plus days, when I was in the mortgage biz.... I had a recently graduated UCLA coed working for me. She taught aerobics in the morning before coming into work, so you can do your own visualizations, but I guarantee whatever you visualize won't come close to the reality. So she shows up, looking like that, with the most gigantic cup of coffee 7/11 sells. Every day. She would change into her frumpy (by comparison) work clothes, and get to work. While I repeatedly told her to keep the massive coffee vessel away from the computer and electronics, all too often I would catch her sneaking her gigantic cup next to the tech goodies at her workstation.

OK, so when she finally spilled the big gulp o' coffee, it was onto the SE's original AEK, and the Brother electronic typewriter/printer, not an Airbus cockpit, but it did cause a business diversion. I learned how indestructible those old aircraft carrier keyboards were/are, and thankfully the manager of the business machines store was a good friend of mine, and he exchanged the typewriter for me at some incredibly favorable terms considering the circumstances.

It's amazing that people know how incompatible hot coffee and sophisticated electronics are, yet even in the face of such knowledge, just how many times their paths nonetheless get intertwined. I won't even start about the cold can of Coca Cola, one of best golf buddy's, and my AppleFax™ modem.

That was my immediate connection. It was a pretty good show.

Carl: There's been an explosion in main housing.

Brian: Listen, we've got to release the number three or that pump's gonna blow.

Carl: If the pump blows that could mean a meltdown.

Brian: What is happening?

Matt: I'll tell you what's happening. The Pepsi Syndrome.

[ shows title: The Pepsi Syndrome ]

Brian: Pepsi Syndrome? I've never heard of it.

Matt: Only a handful of people know what the Pepsi Syndrome means. Maybe soon, everyone will know it.

Carl: But, what is it?

Matt: Well, the Pepsi Syndrome. If someone spills a Pepsi on the control panel of a nuclear power reactor, the panel can short-circuit, and the whole core may melt down.

Brian: But, you spilled a Coke.

Matt: It doesn't matter. Any cola does it.

Carl: Any cola? What about RC Cola?

Matt: Yeah, RC does it.

Brian: Canada Dry?

Matt: Sure.

Carl: 7-up?

Matt: It's harmless. It's an un-cola. [ smacks his hands to his forehead ] Oh, wow! I could have had a V8!
