What does this do? It's really hard to tell from the photo and description how this is configured.

Old style 30 pin (male) connectors designed to plug into your phone or iPod can use this adapter to plug into a new iPhone or iPod.

For example, my ancient iHome alarm clock had a 30 pin male on top that my old fat iPod Nano would dock to charge or play. This would allow my iPhone to do the same.

Likely, the original poster had a car stereo with a similar had-wired connector.
